GB Ended- I am holding Round 2, with gallium and other elements as well, such as indium, selenium, and bismuth.  Thread: http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1240374838

This is a group buy for gallium, element #31.  It has a melting point of 30*C (86*F), so you can melt it in your hand.  I have also been successful in melting a small piece of gallium with my laser.  This gallium is in the form of beads/pellets, although you can reshape it quite easily (just melt it to combine/separate pieces.) Gallium is completely nontoxic, and to the best of my knowledge, it is legal to ship anywhere.  Purity is 99.99%.

Anyway, the price is $2.50 per gram of gallium. (United Nuclear sells it for $15 per gram!) There is no order limit.  This GB will end on Sunday, and I will place the order Monday. All orders of gallium have been shipped.

If this is in the wrong section and should be moved to off-topic, I apologize.  c0ldshadow- feel free to move this thread if you deem it right to do so.

Pics: On the left is a blob I made from melting pellets and reshaping them.  It's probably about 2 or 3 grams.  On the right is 14 grams of gallium pellets.

I think mines enough to start the GB, hope we get some more, make sure your supplier separates each order.

Yeah, I could do the GB with your order alone, you have already guaranteed yourself and anyone else who might participate a place! Still, the more people in this, the merrier!

I'd maybe buy some, but I'm wondering - what are some uses for it. I've read about high-temperature thermometers and that they're used in semi-conductors, but what do you or Day plan on using it for? (Or is it just to mess around w/ because its still cool lol)

Well, gallium can be alloyed with indium to make a liquid at room temperature alloy. I just have it to mess around with- and also because I'm an element collector. I don't know about anyone else. Really, though, how cool is it to have something you can melt in your hand?! (Or with your laser for that matter.)

@billg519: Thanks Bill- I got you on the list!

I've had some questions about international shipping, and shipping in general. I will just charge you for whatever it costs to ship it. So, prices would depend on the method you choose and (obviously) where you live.

Where I live it's almost always that hot! :-[

So even If I DONT hold it will melt!

I'm in for 40 grams.

As someone who always needs something in his hands to play with, I know I would just love this.

Thanks!

man, that stuff looks fun. Almost 35-37C degrees everyday where I am but :( .

Whats the average time it takes to melt.

The heat here would kill it for me too, it would only be usable in a airconditioned room or in winter at night, and even then it doesnt go below 9C :P

Looks fun tho :)

Shipping to Aus? Sydney, how much.

Priority mail worldwide costs $13, and first-class mail is $3 worldwide.

It will probably melt in about a minute. Chances are, when it arrives, it very well could be melted already! (Don't worry, I'll make sure to seal it well.)

You're lucky- it is more fun to play with a liquid metal then a solid one.
