FYI - Cheap 532nm Goggles

OK, I found this website today:

They have goggles for $29.95, but they don't give any specs.

When I wrote to them to ask what wavelength they block, this is what I got back:

They block the green laser wavelength of 533nm.

533nm? Close enough? But what else can I expect from a salesman? I'm thinking the name "John Thomas" may be a pseudonym, anyway!   ;)

But seriously: How do you check a pair of goggles to see if they work, without taking a chance on blinding yourself?

To check them - place them over the lense of your camera - take a piture of the laser beam/and/or dot.....take a look at the pic....THAT is the only way I can think to do it.....(safely, that is)
 
Well, I got these goggles. I'm not sure what I'm looking for when I take the picture of the dot, however!

Also, I do think they are OK, since when I bounce the beam off the wall in my cube (and I'm not wearing the goggles) I can barely stand to look at the diffuse reflected light from the pointer, but when I use these goggles, I can't even see the dot on the wall!

So... What am I looking for in the picture?
 
Those are just red lens goggles. I found an extremely good pair for cheap at scope stuff. I recieved it just a several days after ordering and was very surprised! I tested then by shining the laser through the glasses and seeing that the dot was not too bright, I know they won't be good enough for a direct blow, but at least now I can burn stuff with my eyes not closed. the website is http :// www .scopestuff.com/ss_gla1. htm . I will not stare at the dot if it's up close for any period of time, but the red lens completely eliminates the beam and makes the dot alot more easy on the eyes. and you cant beat the price! 11 incliding U.S. shippping! :o
 
and... btw... how does this look for a much diffused and dimmer dot, shot taken at about 6 ft away.

Thats the DX 200mW, so normally it is blinding bright! but with those red shades from scope stuff, I can see the dot with very little discomfort, and the beam is invisible.. and normally the dot is a pin head size, but in that pic it is a couple inches, the same size dot as if it was 50 ft away! lol
 
Lol that’s what I was thinking as well :P I don’t normally look at the dot close though. The only way I check mine is If I fire it at something way way far away or at black otherwise It REALLY hurts my eyes (most of my walls are white/cream)
 
I may be the only one on this forum who can look at the dot from these green babies and not feel odd....maybe my vision is already shot enough as it is, and that is why I do not get headaches ? I dunno....
 
I bet you'd feel odd (blinded/dazzled etc..) staring at a 125mW dot on a white wall <10 ft away! or else what u said may be right .. :o
 
I bet that dot's actually the IR leakage from the laser.  That's why it's so big.  ;D
 
Okay guys - don't waste your money on goggles from scope stuff - they do NOTHING to protect your eyes ! The do NOT filter out the green light - what happens is they pretty much act like wearing sunglasses - there is no benefit to wearing these, other than possibly allowing more damage to occur to your eyes. They will reflect some of the beam, and it does diffuse the light a bit, so they could be used in a pinch, but I honestly do NOT recommend them at all !

This review would be two thumbs down.
 
would you be able to elaborate as to why? The red lens seems to block out much of the green light for me at least. Sunglases just dilate your pupil and block all light equally out --- but the red seems to do quite alot. Here is the same "dot" as before except without any glasses, it seems to be much more concentrated (harmful) light, and the beam is visible indoors with some daylight. W/ glasses, no beam, aLOT dimmer dot! It might not look that way, but the camera is not as sensitive as your eyes, so the glare is actually really intense.

I understand - but they block less than 5% of the 532nm light going through them. I thought a lot was being reflected, but that is not the case - I shone my NOVA through it, measuring the output, and it dropped by a little less than 5% - so I rounded up. I wanted to make sure of it - and that is enough to convince me ! 8-) These will go into the pile of stuff that ALMOST worked, and to be sold at yard sales later on down the line....
