By the way, is there a list on here of all the diodes voltage drops?
The voltage drop will change with current.
Use Figure 2 Typical Forward
Characteristics in the 1N540x datasheet.

The resistor will then add another voltage
drop in a 1:1 proportion with the current.
So as an example, say your diode is a
typical M140 running at 1.8A. Dropping
around 4.6-4.8V, first subtract the voltage
drop of the resistor, which will be 1.8V.
Then divide that by the voltage drop of a
single diode, 0.85. So 3 or 4 diodes would
be about right.
4.7 - 1.8 / 0.85 = 3.4 diodes
