FS: Pocket Mini Build Kit! - Easy Assembly!

doc4you, I sent your Pocket Mini Kit with 'Hot' option (and other items) today. (Monday)

I set the driver to 437mA's. In the 'jumper range' that I used, this was as close as I could get to 420mA's. (in this case)

Sometimes there are some slight variations in the exact range of the FlexDrives. (as far as exactly where the range will begin or end)

Anyway, you will be fine at 437mA's for your long open can build. I have one at 452mA's, and have even used 470 in the past. As long as you keep a 1 min. on / 1 min off duty cycle, you should be fine at 437mA's.

About duty cycle... This may, or may not really be necessary. But I have always used a duty cycle, and have had good results. I figure it can't hurt right?

I was up in NYC visiting family, and gave my brother his first laser - a Pocket Mini with a PHR installed running at 92mA, putting out ~96mW of violet photon goodness. I also supplied two rechargeable CR123A cells, plus a charger and case.

He loved the host, small but heavy and within seconds I had him burning paper with it (I brought mine along with some other lasers).

I did not inform him of the color. He was quite surprised to see the violet color on the wall.

Good show Jayrob, in impressing the uninitiated with DIY power. I'll have to build a matching red for him for Christmas.

Generous guy you are... I'm sure you warned him of the eye hazards.

It should last a long time at 92mA's. :)

When it all comes down to it, about HOW MUCH will this cost me if i went with a blue laser option for this pocket mini build?

I love the look of these hosts and completed lasers. I just dont know if it would be in my price range to complete one!

I'm trying to learn exactly what other parts i would need and how much they cost but im unsure so ive resorted in asking now! lol.

The Pocket Mini Kit with the 'Hot' option would mean that all you need to complete the build, is a diode in an AixiZ module, and a battery...

Here's the price breakdown if you were to buy a PHR diode pre-installed into an AixiZ module from HighTechDealz:

* PHR installed into AixiZ module - Less than $20 dollars.
http://hightechdealz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=4

My kit:

* Basic Pocket Mini kit - $43 (host/heatsink/drill the pill)
* Add the 'Hot' option - Plus $48 (FlexDrive installed and current pre-set)
* Shipping - $6

Shipping: Out of U.S. buyer assumes responsibility at that price. It should not be a problem though... (I would mark the package as a gift, with a description of 'LED Flashlight' with a low value of $15)

Then all you need is a battery.

About the 'Hot' option:

This is most of the work in the build. See this post for detailed pictures and a tutorial link for what is needed on your part to complete the assembly with the 'Hot' option:

This host makes a really nice build for a red or a blu-ray! It offers the option of using a primary CR123 battery, or an RCR123 rechargeable. The UltraFire rechargeable batteries are sometimes a 'snug' fit, but the AW batteries slide right in nice and perfect...

EXCELLENT! So the rundown would be the following (roughly)

$17.28 - diode/module install
$43.00 - Basic Pocket Mini kit
$48.00 - FlexDrive installed and current pre-set
$06.00 - Shipping
--------------------
$114.28 - Grand Total

Really nice deal it looks like to me!
Passes my budget i was hoping to have though... we'll see, might have to wait longer to do this... or just buy a burner for $50.00
How much power does that blu-ray have? (mW)

The common setting for the PHR's is 125mA's. Some push them higher, and others run them at 100mA's for a really long life.

The diodes are cheap, so that's why people push them. 125mA's will give good life normally.

This current will give you about 110mW's with an AixiZ acrylic lens. (back opened)

There are some differences in efficiency between diodes, and some will give more power or less, but the average is as stated above.

My 405-G-1 glass lens modification, which threads right into an AixiZ module, will give you a 26% to 28% increase in power for the same current setting. (vs AixiZ acrylic - back opened)

Not really needed for a PHR, but if you ever upgrade to a 6X or 8X, you will want glass. The acrylic will degrade with the power of a 6X or higher.

The glass lens would last a lifetime. It can be used for your higher power blu-ray build in the future! Or a red build too for that matter...

nice!! so, even with 100mA's the laser will still burn? Just take little longer than the 125mA's?

I am glad to hear, that it wont be a NEED for me to upgrade to glass unless i want that increase or unless i upgrade to higher power diode. I'll be going "El Cheapo" this time around and save for future upgrades later.

I guess as long as i got a GOOD host and it is well constructed to simply swap out for upgrades later, I am good with going basic as i can for now, untill i get the urge to spend more $$$ lol.

Thank you for your support!!
I love the pocket mini design! =D
I'd love to have all those warming stickers and bluray labels and all that jazz too!! where can i get some of those or does it come with them?

The stickers that I have used, I got from andy_con, who does not make them anymore last I heard...

The Pocket Mini host has limited areas to use stickers, so I had to cut them to fit on some areas.

You could do something similar with what ever warning labels you can find. I believe I saw a thread in this BST section about custom labels...
Jay

ok sweet!

I might have to get up with you on getting this Pocket Mini Build!
Seems to be the most popular and well built.

It's definitely a favorite of many...

There are some really nice builds by several members here.

Welcome to LPF!

I have your driver set at 125mA's per our discussion.

As you can see in the picture, your blue Tritium vial is installed...

Most don't get the tritium option. I don't blame them because it is kind of pricey. But in order to get the tiny slot machined just right, it is more of an operation than you would think. I have to remove my lathe chuck and tool rest, to replace with my milling attachment and draw bar for the tiny milling bit. Then there's quite a bit of time involved in making sure of the alignment before cutting, because you only get one shot at it, and if the slot is not straight, you have ruined the host.

Anyway, those who do get the Tritium option, will like the end result! :)

:thanks:
Jay

Love the Tritium! its so awesome!

Props to Jay for the skill involved with installing them! Great Work!

:thanks:

Darkarmyofone, your Pocket Mini's and other stuff went out today. (Thursday)

Thanks a bunch man...
