*New* I also have the heatsink dimensions for making it fit perfectly into this 3 X AAA (size battery - use 3.6 volt 10440) MXDL, which makes a very nice Blu-Ray host!:

For a Blu-Ray, the heatsink is mostly just for 'looks'. But, if you are making a Blu-Ray BURNER, from a Blu-Ray writer harvest, you may want to use the heatsink. Or, if you just want a really nice Blu-Ray using this host!

Sorry Steve...Chances are, after your get your MXDL, and see how nice that heatsink fits in there, you'll want to make another with a Meredith module this time!

Jay, Are you recommending the Meredith module over Aixiz? I presume that's cause of the glass lens vs plastic, right?

Both designs are very nice! I like both modules, but I do favor the Meredith modules for a couple of reasons even though they cost more.

1. You can easily change lenses for testing. (However, I do have a glass AixiZ on the way from drlava) So, I guess that will be the same. But, I haven't tried it yet with the glass AixiZ, so I don't know if it will perform like the Meredith glass lens. I saw pictures of the AixiZ, and it looks like it is very long, and may 'stick out' the front of the module. (the look of the finished laser, is very important to me)
2. Easier to change out the LD when necessary.
3. I just like the looks better. The nice brass piece for focussing.
4. Last but not least, so far, the Meredith glass gives the most power measurements for the same current. (still waiting to try my AixiZ glass)

That said, I still have lots of AixiZ module DIY lasers! I really think you have to have at least one of each! And if you held my latest blu-ray MXDL (pictured above) in your hand, I guarantee that you would have to have one!
Jay

Note: If you decide to go with the Meredith module, don't forget to order the 5.6mm adapter.

My PayPal account says that the funds are supposed to clear tomorrow Sarge, as soon as they do, I'll have your heatsinks made up! I order the aluminum from here:

Re: ***MXDL Custom Machined Heatsinks***

thanks Jay! I'll be looking for it in the mail!

And as for every body talking about the modules, I only have AixiZ modules (its cause I don't have a job and can't afford the nice Meredith modules right now lol), but it seems that the AixiZ ones do stick out more! looking at the pictures above, the AixiZ stick out about 2 times longer. Thats not very much considering the meredith modules don't stick out very much, but it would be more convenient that way.

also, anybody with a meredith module, how is the focusing unit? for the AixiZ modules, the focal piece tend to be loose and easily moved. what is the meredith one like?

Re: ***MXDL Custom Machined Heatsinks***

Is the charger still up for grabs with your next order?

You still have a very small amount of 'play' in the threads, but not nearly as bad as the AixiZ modules. I have used some teflon tape on the AixiZ threads and it helps some...

Got mine in the mail today. It was the last thing I ordered and the first to arrive. Good quality, great service.

geek, thanks for letting me know you got it. I was wondering if it made it out to the Islands.

TheMonk, just to let you know that I got yours done tonight...It will be in the mail tomorrow. Please post back and let everybody know how you like the quality. (plus, that way I'll know you got it)

any heatsinks left?

Yes, I am still making them! If you are in the U.S., just PayPal $23 bucks to jayrob@inreach.com and specify which host (red burner MXDL, or Blu-ray MXDL), and which module style. If not in the U.S., PM me your shipping address and I will check the postage.

steelybob, yours is done! I'm dropping it at the post office this morning. Let me know that it got to you...

Re: F.S. ***MXDL Custom Machined Heatsinks***

Free: I thought I ordered 10, 3 ohm 1 watt resistors. Well, they sent me 10 packs of 10. The 3 ohm resistor at the LM317 in a DDL style driver, will regulate the driver at 420mA's. Which is a nice place to be for running an open can diode! (heatsinked)

So, while my supply lasts, I am going to offer a free 3 ohm 1 watt resistor to anyone who buys a heatsink. All you have to do, is mention it when you order the heatsink...
