FS: ***MXDL Custom Machined Heatsinks***

I replied saying that "yea Jay I was kidding, I meant you selling the MXDL's themselves"

maybe I am blind.... :-/ :-/ :-/

Jay, i just got my heatsinks.. they are very impressive.. and the meredith lenses fit oh so perfectly.. i think i may have destroyed both of my diodes putting them in the adapter though :-/ i can get them to light up but its sort of chintzy.. i think maybe i bent the heatsink on the diode while fitting it in the adaptor.. i dunno.. it seems like if i move the wires a certain way i can get it to laize.. but not all the time.. its sort of weird.. any ideas? (lol, but the heatsinks are wonderful!! :) )

Glad you like the heatsinks! But I'm sorry to hear about your LD's. If you think that they got 'bent' when you were pressing them into the 5.6mm adapter, then they probably got damaged.

I do have a couple of tips for you that will make it easier for the next time.

* Find a socket that the 5.6mm adapter fits nicely into.
* Put an extra 'bevel' on the edge of the 5.6mm adapter (where the LD will press into - see picture)
Meredith bevel.jpg

* The other tool you see here, is something I made to press the LD's. The LD pins fit into the small hole. This allows you to make an LD 'sandwich'. Using a vice, you then 'press' the LD into the adapter.

Instead of the tool that I made for this, the back tube from an AixiZ module will work.

well! thanks for the advice! that seems a lot better than the "method" i used ;) . Im about to get a couple more diodes on order and see if i can try this again lol.. its okay i guess cause im still waiting on DX for my mxdl's grrrrr

climbak, your heatsink is done! I'll have it in the mail for you tomorrow. Let me know how you like it...

daguin, your twins will be delivered shortly!

You are quick; like rabbit :P

My heatsinks arrived today. Very nice. I guess I'm going to have to start thinking about a driver, eh?

Peace,
dave

got my BR+MXDL working today, 3mW max....

my other diode goes to 5mW....

It still floureces though, and that is cool!!!

Good to know you got the heatsinks Dave. Thanks for letting me know. Let us know how the build goes! Feel free to ask me about the driver. There's lots of stuff I don't know, but I do know about this build using the DDL driver.

Congrats! You used a 33 ohm resistor? Or, a pot? Seems like you should have got more power than that amk...

I will be all over you for this. :)
My field isn't even close to electronics. :-[
I haven't soldered anything since high school (and that was a loooong time ago . . .and I was high at the time) ;)

The MXDL's are in "packaging". A diode and module is in the mail. I'm already starting to sweat :-/

Wish me luck

What is your plan for the build Dave? Open can or Phazor? The open can (long) runs good at 420mA using that heatsink (3 ohm resistor/DDL driver). Pretty sure the Phazor diodes will be alright at that current too. Still waiting for more testing on that though. It would be great to see one of drlava's graphs on the Phazor diode!

My first will be an open can. It is what was quickly available. It will be the "cheaper" experiment. I'm sure that next will be a 6X Blu-Ray. The MXDL host for it is already on the way. Heck; by the time I get this done the 6X diodes may be directly available or maybe even the 10X's may be out ;) I guess my next step should be getting in touch with DDL about a driver. I guess I should also get myself a soldering iron, eh?

Peace,
dave

Dave, I haven't posted this in a while. I thought I had better post it in case you were going to do the MXDL blu-ray build that I did. Because if so, then the heatsink is machined different for that host. Let me know if you want to trade one of your heatsinks for the 'Blue-AixiZ' heatsink.

For others to know...
I want to post this picture from time to time, to remind everybody that there are now three different MXDL hosts, that I am making heatsinks for. Each build, has a different host, heatsink, battery supply, and driver.

1. 4171 - ($23 plus shipping) The MXDL that takes 2 X 3.6 volt rechargeable batteries for the high powered red diodes: (using a FlexDrive, with 3.0 volt batteries, this host is also great for a blu-ray build!)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171

2. 3405 - ($23 plus shipping) The MXDL that takes 3 X AAA size (3.6 volt 10440 batteries for the blu-ray build/DDL driver):
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3405

3. 5387 – ($25 plus shipping) The ‘side button’ MXDL that takes 3 X AAA size batteries:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5387
If DX is out of the 5387 host, use the 5095 host. It is the exact same for this build:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5095

The differences in these first two heatsinks, can barely be seen visually. But they are machined slightly differently for the fit into their respective MXDL hosts. Either style, can be fit for an AixiZ module, or a Meredith module.

In this picture, I have marked the heatsinks.

4171-A stands for 'DX SKU 4171 fit for AixiZ'.

3405-A stands for 'DX SKU 3405 fit for AixiZ'.

Note: Since we now have the FlexDrives, either host can be used for a Red, or a blu-ray build. So I will be marking the heatsinks with the DX SKU number of the host.

Just to let everybody know this. There would be no misunderstanding on your order, if you said 'I would like a 4171 - Meredith, and a 3405 - AixiZ'.

Here’s the new one:
(this one is $25 plus shipping)

Here's my tutorial on the build:

I am going to keep posting this picture from time to time, so that new ones will understand...
Jay

P.S. Once again, besides the MXDL host & heatsink being different for these builds, the battery configuration will differ, depending on which driver you will be using...

Perhaps, since this is an ongoing issue - you should contact c0ldshadow, and have him sticky it ?

Good idea Greg! Hey did you get time to start using your lathe yet?
Jay

Not yet - I haven't even been in my LAB in ages :( This injury, and then complications from surgery in December have really got me screwed up :(

That lathe will be there for you. Hope you get healed up soon, and that you don't have be all druged up on pain killers. Good to see that your back!
