When removing the tail cap I made a quick connection to the battery tube and the negative of the battery. It made a little click sound at the diode and when I went to turn it back on I got nothing. Just making that connection should Not have killed the diode. I have no idea why. I swear that exactly what happened. I've done it to other lasers with no problems. Just wish I knew what caused the death of the diode.

Damn. I do that all the time with many lasers and never had any issues... I'll never do it again!

On that note, I just repaired my Dominator today!!! too bad I have no LPM so I cant tell its output, but it looks like it used to. still no back of diode heat sink, but I will stick with safer duty cycles for now

I couldnt do the soldering myself, but the diode press came today, so I called up the local electronics shop to see if they could help me, told them I could point out exactly what needed done, just some soldering. I show it to the guy and he's like, "oh this'll be easy. on the phone you made it sound harder, I've soldered wires the size of hairs" he was interested in the working results, I took safety glasses so I could do a demonstration. he was blown away. he seemed to realize he had everything but a diode press to build lasers and asked about where to get stuff to do it

AND now the DominatoR's dead again, LED diode. stuck with 1 minute or less, did not matter. glad I did not sell it with this diode as it would have conked out on the buyer, but I AM GETTING REALLY F****** TIRED OF THIS LUCK. I almost want to say F*** it and sell all my units, just call them all broken to cover my ass even if they currently work.

this is some B.S. half my handhelds have needed diode replacement, the DominatoR twice now, and the 638 may need a new one (again). know how many of these dead diodes lasted at least a year before dying? ZERO

OMG I'm so sorry. Tell you the truth, I'm scared to put a new one in mine at 2.56a.

I went through a month were I killed 3 diodes. Couldn't believe my luck either.

I really want to hear how many of the current gen 9mm diodes have died, and how fast, at that current. I mean the previous one took 4 minute duty cycles a fair number of times before slightly degrading, this one dies with less than 10 minutes total, about 30- 45 seconds at a time on it? Now I'm not sure what to do with the husk, because I also stripped the set screw hole in the heat sink. can these be re-threaded and used with a slightly larger set screw? is this going to cost a bunch? I almost just want to offer it for $20 + shipping to anyone who wants it

I'm sure it could be re tapped to fit a larger set screw. Tap and dyes are pretty expensive if you're just using it for that. I'm wondering if the guy who soldered it did something wrong. Maybe a short with a frayed wire. Just a guess though. Rick trent runs his at that current all the time, as you know.

Might be that Blord bins the diodes that can take the full current and uses them on the Cu Dominator and uses the "weaker" diodes on the Al version and on other hosts?

But yeah, your luck is quite strange with those things :(

Yes, you can re-tap that stripped set screw hole with a larger size, or if you want to, you can drill a different hole and put the same size screw in another place.

If it was a short, wouldn't it fry, not LED?

Maybe try a machine shop that resurfaces engine parts or something similar. They should be able to re-tap the hole with no issues.

A local shop ought to be able to do that for you with a similar size tap for a reasonable cost. Shipping would probably kill you.
If by chance you can't find anybody to do the work, and you find that shipping is reasonable, I'd do it for you N/C.
If you decide to do it yourself, and need a small drill bit and tap, let me know, I may be able to help.
