No kidding I ordered this along with my stuff (First order for a custom). I don't think it's that much because it needs to be machined, it's glass and drastically increases laser output. I'm a noob enthusiast and I think it's worth it. If anyone doesn't think it's worth it GTFO.:crackup:

Just reading this now....

The splash has been the reason i was hesitating with the lens GB. I didn't know how to explain it to people. I was scared people wouldn't like the results.... Cos my short FL lens gives practically identical results, due to the practically same specs (to the degree where it matters, that is).

But at least now people know for sure, i wasn't exaggerating with the power increase results... :)


As rkcstr said on the first page, the increase will vary with the diode's wavelength and beam profile. Rounder beam diodes will get increased less than flatter beam diodes. Shorter wavelength diodes will get increased MUCH more than longer wavelength diodes. And 405nm diodes vary a lot in both even among the same type!

I mean, i found increases vary as much as 27-43% just from the wavelength difference with the same diode model!


Anyways, seems like you have the short FL lenses covered, Jay. Which is a big relief for me.. People now know what they do, and i don't have to make any hard decisions anymore. I can focus on my favorite, which was nearly impossible before.


But first, i would very much like one of your lenses, Jay. For proper comparison they need to be compared on the same diode (due to the wavelength and beam profile variations). I'd like to compare it to my short FL lens, to see if the splatter is any different.... (well only the size could be)


I have paid much more for some lenses than this, during my research, and i didn't even get them mounted (nor did i know if they would work or not)! Never mind mounted in metal lens nuts! Good job, Jay!



P.S. I hope you offer combined shipping.. :D
I need that knurled EZ Focus adapter badly! ;)

Oh, and Jay..

You might not even need to drill the back of the lens nut out to expose the lens more..

Look at the datasheet closelly, at the "Clear Apperture" part i mean.. That's all the exposure you need...

It may make it an easier job for you, save some time.... :)

Edit: There is a little more power available by drilling out the entry aperture. Not really for blu-ray, because the lens must be so close to the blu-ray diode to get focus. But for red, you get a little more power by enlarging this entry aperture. I did testing on this before I offered this mount.

The lens is well suited for red diodes as well, giving about a 15% increase in power vs AixiZ acrylic. (back opened)

Ah, yes, i completelly forgot about reds!

The FL is LONGER with longer wavelength, and all the specs change....


Sorry if this is answered, but how does this lens compare in increase for reds, to the Meredith? Should be the same (within a percent or two)?
I'm asking, because after testing, i'll be putting it into my favorite red, where my short FL custom lens currently is, cos there i like the results very much. EDIT2: Did you answer my question before i asked it or did you edit it in? :confused:

It's pretty close, but the Meredith is still better for red.

But Meredith is now offering a broad band lens that is decent for both blu-ray and red. Their 'optimized for red' lens will no longer be available. I only have about 5 or 6 left.

I did power comparisons with red and blu-ray for both of the Meredith glass lenses, as well as AixiZ glass, AixiZ acrylic (back opened) and my 405-G-1 glass lens...

It makes sense for them to offer broadband only since the difference in results is small and they can get away cheaper if they only buy the one coating....
 
I don't have any of their new lenses on hand, but it will be one to compare with your best choice lens for the blu-ray...

I'm really glad to see you back and posting! I have tried to contact you about comparing this 405-G-1 glass lens since I first tried it!

But it was so good, that I could not hold back from sharing it, and then people naturally wanted it. Even with the 'splash'.

But as you see from the pictures in the first post, the mount in the metal nut is very nice. And it allows you to be able to take it apart and clean the lens once a year or so. (if needed)

Yeah, i like the fact that you can take it appart, altho i have bad experiences with touching lenses. Preferably it should be cleaned inside the lens nut with an acetone bath. That's how the manufacturers do it, and that's why it's great you used all metal parts here!

I almost wanted to suggest a rubber o-ring for the front face support (cos the largest lens manufacturer in the world does, in their lens mounting instructions), but then the acetone bath would be out of the question... (just in case someone gets confused: Nail-polish remover is NOT acetone!!! It just contains a tiny bit, the rest is oil and perfume!! Don't do a nail-polish remover bath!!!)


Otherwise, Meredith's new lens should be completelly identical to my short FL lens, ever since it got the broadband coating.

Remember? My short FL custom lens is actually a "Meredith" (or rather it's larger sister), but with a broadband coating, instead of NIR....



I just now realize i should have known from the start, that the splash wouldn't bother you, Dave, and many others, since you've been using regular Meredith's with blu-rays for a long time. You got used to it being there. Why would it bother you here, when this lens suddenly gave you so much more power due to the proper coating.

But since i never made a meredith blu-ray, i was more than a little surprised by it. Couldn't figure it out for a long time... Why is it there, where does it come from... Until a few days ago, when i looked at some photos of my very first custom lens attempt - the spherical lens, or rather it's output. The "splash" source is clearly visible there....


You know one thing that makes me happy?

Do you remember my very first, earliest predictions about how much the max power increase could be in theory?

I said some crazy numbers ("30-40% or even more"), which i later reduced to ~20%, but then the test results went above and beyond anything i ever dreamed of, and you just confirmed them - indirectly.. :)


Man, if i knew how willing (and capable) you'd be to do this kind of lens nut modification before... I shouldn't have hesitated, when i saw the splash.... I should have done a test buy for both models. But all i could think off was how to get the prices lower for everyone... Didn't think people would pay the full price of a lens one-by-one... Man, how stupid i was....

Oh well.. But we'll do it now.. :)
