While looking for a exposure time in a picture on LPF I noticed something that I think everyone should be aware of.

For those who do not know what EXIF data is, let me explain, if you do know, then you can just skip the next paragraph.

EXIF data is some information stored with pictures. This information can be viewed by anyone who has access to your pictures. This data includes camera make and model, date and time taken, exposure time, and sometimes even location.

Not all cameras put a location in the EXIF data. On an iPhone there is an option in settings, and some cameras dont have the ability to locate you at all. If you want to know if you are sending location data (and you dont know how to view it yourself), PM me (or post) a link to a picture you have taken (and posted) and I will tell you what data it contains.

The locations put on these can be extremely accurate. I found 3 people today who with this data have revealed their exact address.

What can you do about it

Some cameras have a setting to turn location on and off, but if they dont, then you need some software.

I am not affiliated with any of the links I post, and I am unable to help you with the software bellow.

EXIF cleaner - Shareware for PC
Photo Linker - $50 with a 30 day free trial for Mac

Feel free to ask any questions.

^^^Nice heads up to those not aware.

To anyone on Windows 7, you can right click on the file, go to properties, details, and from there remove the data.

For some reason I get an error about altitude quite often with my pics. Personally I don't really care... my coordinates are no secret - plenty of people have my address in PM's but I can see how it would bug some.

Wow. I never even knew this data existed on photo's. reminds me of that time I found out the power behind a .pdf

Good info about the windows 7 thing.

I dont have a problem with people who I send money to having my address - if I didnt trust them, they wouldnt have my money.

However on a forum like LPF where you dont need an account to see pictures, I do have a problem with anyone being able to see my location at any time

^^^The data contained in videos is even more interesting. There are companies out there working exclusively on ways to essentially make any data file unique. The age of anonymous internet is coming to an end...

At more or less the same pace as privacy becomes a thing of the past. Most people (especially younger people) seem perfectly ok with it:undecided:

Espically having the FDA knowing were your're at with the lasers.

Edit: This could stop them from intimidating you if you build lasers.

I have sent out some PMs to people who have posted images with locations in them :)

Good. I just have a feeling SOMEONE could get wrongfully implicated in a laser strike on a plane or something else If we leave the EXIF data up. It isn't good to let everyone know where you use a high powered laser at. They could just point the finger at you.

Yeah I've known about the data for years. Camera phones are the worst, since many of them (iPhone) contain a GPS. I've not been bothering to strip the data, but you all do make a good point.

Of course since I use my real name as my username, you can tell I'm not normally too concerned with privacy online.

Can you tell me the info of this picture. Idc if people know my location.

Good and useful thread Jacob32123! Many forget or are unaware of the information they leak. Maybe LPF can offer a, 'clean image', option?

PM me about any info you can glean from my posts or anything like that. I'd prefer to be anonymous for a number of reasons. None of them nefarious by the way! Here's a random pic for you to play with... Because my car attracts pussy! Let me know about any leaked info!

There was a topic on another forum where a guy posted a pic of his sister and someone found his address and posted it from the GPS coordinates on his I phone. He ended up getting a few people who live near come by and stuff. Very scary.
