Hello guys, I have a couple of questions:

I'm trying to build my first laser, I bought from ebay a Xbox 360 HD DVD DRIVE 405nm Diode LASER LENS PHR-803T (is this Diode btw Blue-ray?), and an Aixiz 5mW laser housing.

My question is: What should I do with the laserdriver, build one myself (if it isn't to hard, LM317 constant current driver) or buy a driver? (and what would be the best, considering shipping, and quality, and output afcourse)

I hope you can help me a bit, to get started.

since you are gonna be reading anyways go read the stickies it will give you all the knowledge you need. but in the mean time here is some basic info for you.w


yes the phr is a blu-ray. and when you choose your driver you should set it for 100ma for safe and long use. the driver you choose in my opinion depends on the host. if you are using a project box or similar and know how to follow basic schematics then go with the ddl driver. if you are using a small host with room for only one battery the use a flexdrive, if you are using a bigger host that its batteries voltage can add up to 10-12 volts then use a rkcstr driver.

go to www.rog8811.com for tutorial on how to make the driver and a dummy test load to set the current.

Rkcstr and Drlava's Flexdrive v4 are about the same par and becomes more of a personal choice as long as space allows. I personally use a flexdrive because I don't like having to run a ton of voltage for my bluray.

First I'll use a project box (big host) and a DLL driver to learn the basics, then I can always go to smaller hosts. So I'm thinking of making a DLL circuit. How much volts do I need for my PHR-803T? 9,0 volt? And do I need only 10 Ohm? I'll post some pics of how it is going.

Your PHR diode needs 5v~ so select your batteries according to your voltage drop across the driver circuit. What is your question about the 10Ohm resistor? It didn't seem clear to me.

I mean in the schematics of the DLL circuit it shows 2 x 10 Ohms. And then it sais when you have a blue-ray diode you only have to use 1 x 10 Ohms to give you a max current of 125ma . Is this correct?

Could you post a screenshot of the schematic? I am not really sure of the question you are asking. From what I gather, yes you would just use 1 10ohm resistor rather than 2.

Here you go, this is what I'm planning to build. But use only 1 x 10 Ohm.

Ok I understand now. You want to know if you use just 1x 10 ohm you will have a maximum current of 125mA with your potentiometer turned all the way up. I think?

Voltage needed by regulator to make it work 3v

Additional voltage to get long life between battery changes 1.2v.

Add that up and you get 9.0volts."

My PHR was running at 118-119mA without any problems and very little heat. I just recently turned it up to 131mA and it seems to get hot faster but I can not confirm longetivity yet. You read 4.5v for the diode which could be just as correct as the 5v I mentioned. If the voltage drop across your driver is 3v then a 9v battery would be the closest thing to the proper voltage. The mentioned additional voltage doesn't really make sence to me though. Yes you will get a little more life out of the batteries because it has to drop through more voltage than if you ran with 8v, but I wouldn't plan to run extra voltage for just that reason.

I am running my PHR with 2 energizer lithium AAA's which started around 1.7v ea. and have dropped down to about 1.49v ea. now. (this is with a flexdrive). All in all, I think you have the idea and all of your sources seem to be correct. Now there is only one thing left to do... build it :D

Here is a pictorial layout of the LM317 layout I modified for BluRay (125ma) from rog8811:

The center terminal on the regulator is the output of the LM317.

I use two lith-ion batteries, which give 8.4 VDC @ full charge.

Larry said Lith-ion not lithium. There is a difference ;) typical lithium batteries are about 1.7v whereas lith-ion batteries are typically 3.6-3.7v. So you would either need a 9v or 2 lith-ion(3.6-3.7v). Just wanted to clear up any confusion.
