Front part of the house was built in 1937/38 back part was built in 85.. well to make a long story short we found were the roof is leaking at tad but on my way back to the entry to the attic i found one of these

hanging from the roof... these things are toxic if broken so house fire with one of these hanging over my head no thanks but they are worth about 60-100$ on ebay.. I seen american pickers buy them for forty or fifty dollars on tv so i think its work at least 45 any way just cool

I believe those have carbontetrachloride in them.
Bad stuff for fires and people!!

that is right the do have that in them.. but you have to remember they were made in the twenties and thirties so it old as dirt

Wow I just looked up carbontetrachloride and the NFPA 704 rating is 3 which says "Short exposure could cause serious temporary or moderate residual injury (e.g. chlorine)" and the wiki said "Exposure to high concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (including vapor) can affect the central nervous system, degenerate the liver and kidneys and may result (after prolonged exposure) in coma and even death. Chronic exposure to carbon tetrachloride can cause liver and kidney damage and could result in cancer."

Be very careful!!!
Also i know you said they sell for $60-$100 but are you really aloud to ship them with that nasty stuff inside of them?

Its what they used to use for drycleaning, as its a non-flammable solvent that dissolved grease, removed stains, etc.

It was banned for drycleaning primarily because it was carcinogenic, and, it was replaced by something that cleaned OK, did not cause cancer, but could catch fire....the trade off.

:D

I believe dry cleaning was switched to "Perc". I think
it is perchloroethelyene now and is also non flammable
but makes bad fumes in a fire.
HMike

i dont know if you can ship this or not

Short answer. No.
Those antique fire extinguishers can and do leak... if a little gets on your hands
it can be absorbed through your skin.
Handle only with gloves and a respirator. Actually Hazmat disposal is a safer bet.

If you ship CCl4 it has to be via a carrier thats authorized for hazmat.
usually that means via ground only..

You probably already know this,
CCl4 breaks down into Phosgene upon exposure to heat and it remains a top dawg in being an extremely potent Hepatoxin, a substance that aggressively destroys liver cells.
(Causes liver failure and liver cancer)

CCl4 is a chemical that seriously scares me.
There's a reason why its basically banned unless you're using it to capture Neutrinos.

that is why we removed it from the house and I am going to have the local fire department come get that darn thing from me.. Second thing if you look on ebay they are all over the place intact with the CCI4 in the glass.. Why do people want these things if they are so hazardous to you health and well being...:) Just like the old high school I went to my sophomore year had to make up a week of school due to the fact they were removing asbestos from the building... All this crazy toxic stuff they put out from 1910-1965.. They thought is was fine and turns out it kills...

list of old stuff thought safe that kills..

1. asbestos
2. CCI4
3. PCB's
4. mercury
5. Hydratetrachloride
6. lead
7. methylmercury
8. Toluene
9. dibutylphthalate
10. dimethylphthalate
11. Polychlorinated biphenyl
12. Brominated Flame Retardants
13. PolyVinlyClorides
14. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

these are just a few of the ones off the top of my head

Good plan.
Scary stuff to have in your attic!

Actually Asbestos is safe as long as it
Stays un disturbed. It is still used in pellet stoves as insulation
It is a silicate, and like clay dust , glass dust or
Fiberglass can cause silicosis.

Anyways..
