Yea, you are right.

If i were you, i would be thinking about quitting the hobby.

DON'T. THE FEELING OF DREAD WILL PASS.

It really is frustrated, but now you will never risk going with a shady driver again

As KRNAZNBOY said do not quit. It might be frustrating but that is the way of life :)

I would recommend getting a proper host and driver. And starting a new build. Also , try to do it right and think before any movement. You could use DTR tutorials as a guide.

Diodes can die because of many things. Before handling a diode you should also get some anti-static equipment.

Never ever give up. Just step back, calm down, collect your thoughts and choose a different path to your destination.
It's an opportunity for achieving a solution.
I personally would try a different drive next time.
