FAP800 Question

Well -- I got a variable 20 Amp supply and Damn-- I'm using a charcoal as a target. I can light that SOb easy at 12 amps. I now need to design an expander. 5" of burn distance isn't too impressive but it's HOT.

That's it ! Don't expect good regulation below a couple watts! But it works good for 3 to 21 AMPS !!

Pretty annoying trying to find a proper supply for the big diodes. That being said, I've seen a few Sorensen supplies used (DLM8-75). I figure if it saves the hassle it would be nice to have one of them as a current source.

Brtaman sent me some info on a PTH08T250W module. It is a DC to DC switching converter capable of 50 GD AMPS !!!!! I ordered one from DigiKey.

Now -- I have it running at 20 Amps max from this new PS and it's HOT. Looks like I need to design a beam expander. I have tried a 6x telescope and at close range (~12") I get a good burning spot.
I still need to measure PO but this thing burns. Dim observed light but hot.

The info sent was the data sheet for the module and I tossed it as soon as I read the data. A quick google will find that Digikey has them for $60 each. Data sheets are also there.

That PTH08T250W module looks like it will take 12 volts from lead acid batteries and efficiently drop it into the ~2-3 volt range for these diodes. At only 15 amps, this lights charcoal briquets -- a good flat black, non-reflective target.

Vicor also makes DC-DC converters that might be applicable to powering these high amperage diodes off of 12v-24v. I saw something on PhotonLexicon about using them, and supposedly Dr. Lava was tinkering with it as well.

Edit: iirc, the 24v to 5v maxi converter is capable of 80 amps and has an output voltage range of .5v to 5.5v this goes for about $175 though so it may be cheaper to run the TI modules in parallel.

As far as the vicor module goes; yes, it is possible. This document posted on their site describes how. I'm sure the same principle could be applied to the TI module using its remote sense lines.

I thought those remote sense ports might be handy. Thanks for the schematic. That shunt resistor will be a coil of wire at 50 Amps!

I dumped a little of this IR into an old SKY MCA crystal stack last night and got a bunch of GREEN :eek: I didn't have time to focus or measure power.
