There have been a few threads here about these 3pack lasers from various online stores but not much from the basic LPM result with batteries so out of curiosity, I decided to measure mine.

I was supposed to get another set but my friend who bought it passed away last week (RIP)

But back to topic, The set that I have on hand was from here:
New 3X Red Green Purple Laser Pointer Pen High Power Tour Guider | eBay

The set arrived in a padded envelope (I threw it away already, sorry no pics haha ) and each laser was in a separate smaller bubblewrap bag.

The stickers show each wavelenghts (405nm, 532nm and 650nm) and all were indicated as <5mW (yeah right)

Each test was powered off a variable DC lab supply at 4.2V, 3.0V and 2.4V each as typical voltages for a fully charged Li-ion 10440, a pair of lithium cells and also a pair of nickel based rechargeables.

The pictures will show an amp meter (blue display) for the battery draw or better known as "tailcap" current in Amperes and the red display for the laser output in Watts.

Here are the three lasers.

As a bonus, a power graph of the green (taken a few weeks back, horizontal grid is 10mW/division, vertical grid is 10seconds / division)

The output fluctuates and mode hops and when it got a little warm, output suddenly dropped. When it cooled, it worked back again but still fluctuates.

Took the greenie and measured the IR content. This is a shocker!

That is 36mW of IR!!

(for pictures)

edit: let me know if you want some additional information/measurement and I'll see if I can provide it.

Hi nice review well done, did you give the green time to warm up as I've found that they at first only put out about 20 mW if that but given a few minutes of warm up at 1 minute on 15 seconds off the output comes up a lot ,interesting results as they match give or take what i usually get, except my greens always need some TLC before they go over 50mW ,of course you will get exceptions to what you expect ..+1

Thanks!

Yes, with the green, I waited for the output to stabilize before taking the measurement but not letting it get too hot. If mine gets too warm, output drops considerably.

This really bothers me. Think about all the people who buy these and just assume that they are as safe as a 5mW pointer...

Good review btw!

Very cool Test, thank you for charing the results with us :D
I had a "1mW" 405nm Pen from Ebay, and with a Lens it Burns Matches and Wood, also it was very over powerd :)

Going to have to grab one of those packs, thanks for the link and info!

Every time I buy a new wish style red pen laser it comes out to 1-2mW in power. I have yet to find a good one since my 150mW 650nm pen laser died, hopefully the one in this pack comes out to over 5mW!

Thanks guys

Because of the price, I was actually expecting the red to have a simple resistor and diode but by looking through the back, it has a decent driver with an op amp so it was fine driving it with a 10440.

Schweeeeeeet!
You are so awesome I have been waiting for a decent 2013 review of some cheap "5mW" pens. Mine is being held together by tape and a flashlight host (not the good kind either).

Sorry about the loss

I got the 301 hosted pointers sold by these same companies....my 532 is 84mw and my 650 is 264mw!!

Don't have the 405 just yet..I'm betting I get close to 150 mw.200 would be sweet!!!

Two days of staying at home and no work due to immense rainfall and flooding. So I decided to add an update. :)

Took the greenie and measured the IR content. This is a shocker!

That is 36mW of retina burning IR!!! For present and future owners of these kinds of pens, please be aware.

Green was the least of the offenders surprisingly. Red was 117mw at 3v. Eh I guess they'll blind a few kids.
