If you have the sense to close your eyes when hit, a 50mW laser will not burn your eye. I have hit myself with a few and I still have 20/20 vision.

Just a heads up that you will need a lot higher powers than that to cause immediate destruction.
That's not accurate, and you shouldn't spread that kind of misinformation. Depending on the beam diameter and angle of incidence a 50mW laser of any wavelength can indeed cause permanent damage. It may not totally wipe out your vision but it can most certainly cause retinal damage, usually the type the brain automatically compensates for.

I have a spot in my vision that my brain hides 99% of the time from a "50mW" laser show that was set to crowd scan at a party. That model of projector's average output is around 68mW. It has been more than six years and the spot is still there. I still have 20/15 vision, but that doesn't mean anything.

Still not worth the risk. No matter what I would advise wearing safety glasses with lasers above 5mw.

It really depends on the situation, just be smart about it.

If you have a 300mw laser and its in a tripod aimed at a beamstop or into the air outside then i would say you are ok without googles.

Cause really how are you supposed to enjoy the beam if you are wearing goggles literally ALL the time?

Yes, there are setups one can enact where there is vastly reduced danger and you can enjoy the laser without goggles on. I wrote a guide about setting up for it a long time ago, think it was called "how to safely lase". I can't remember if it was a sticky or not. It's not the purposeful setups that result in injuries though, it is the random chance occurrences, which is what goggles are for.

Okay, I deleted my post just to not spread that. At the very least I don't think there is a reason to be terrified.

No worries mate. Aye, no need for terror, but understanding of the risks involved is important =).

Well....

I unfortunately got fired today and was told "you are someone who needs constant supervision & I just don't have time for that in my company currently". Oh well, the total money I made was around $250 in about 2 weeks so not bad at all for a first summer job.

Furthermore, this mean I can't buy the Rigel until christmas(when I get more money) so I'll just go ahead and buy the LG Electra. It may not be as valuable as the Rigel, but it's the first pointer I wanted to get from LG but as you can see....I bought the others first :) Going to be hard to wait until August until I can order it!

O wow. That sucks dude:cryyy: What were you doing that made your boss want to fire you? And why is LG so expensive? Do they have like really high quality lasers?

They buy CNI lasers in bulk and then sell them at a premium according to how overspec they are. A Rigel 6 is the same product as a Rigel 2 just overspec, and with LG you get to pay extra for the privilege. A lot extra.

People say "oh but you know you're getting a quality laser", which for the most part is true, but it's not as if with every other supplier you have no recourse if you get sent a crap product. Although, this is why I won't buy from CNI directly as they only take wire transfer. That way if something did go wrong I wouldn't be able to use the backing of a credit or charge card which is very useful when buying electronics.

That said, there are other resellers of CNI products that don't commit daylight robbery, an example being Dragon, who are currently in very good favour around here due to their 589 offering.

With LG, nothing you buy will be overspec because they make sure to squeeze every penny out of their lasers.

The Rigel 5 and 6 were overspec as the CNI-GLP-594 is listed as 0.6-2mW. Anything over 2mW is according to them a fluke and so overspec. This applies to a variety of DPSS units they offer.

Maybe not overspec to LG, who price according to this convenient anomaly of DPSS lasers, but they were overspec CNI pointers.

Hey FallOutFighter,

I don't exactly know what I was doing which ended in her letting me go but I could tell the moment I walked in that morning that there was a good chance this was my last day and it was. It was a good experience nonetheless :)

OK. Here's my two cents and it's probably not even worth that  I can't offer any insight on the laser, I'm not familiar with it.
In my opinion you need to get the "make it through next week" attitude out of your head. Most bosses didn't get to be bosses because they are stupid. In this case you have three strikes against you.
1 your attitude
2 your boss
3 your boss is female
Of those 3 which one do YOU have control over and can change ?
I'm not ragging on you at all. I've been right where you are at with the same attitude.
Just like a dog can sense fear in a person. Management can sense attitudes.
There is not the perfect place to work and there are all kinds of people to work for and with. You will never get along with all of them.

You are in this situation with this person because there is something to be learned from it. Any job is 90% attitude and 10% ability.
I assure you your boss is not going to change. That leaves you to adapt to your surroundings. Avoiding her will only make it worse. Find a way that she will notice you are a good employee and are trying your hardest. In my opinion you should keep this job and learn from it until you find a better one.

Here is some music for you to enjoy :) Good luck !
