DX100mW Red Module - Mini-Review






So how much voltage does it actually need to power up?

The heatsink is about 33mm square by 45mm long.

Seems like a rather convenient size to me. I was thinking to mount the block on top of a TEC module, which seems feasible for a 30x30mm TEC. It even leaves 15mm of space that would allow me to carefully drill a coupe of into the module and tap thread to secure it.

I just wonder if the green driver section would be abusible to control the TEC - that'd be convenience in a handy package :)

GREAT idea Benm. I hope someone tries that as it'll be a while longer before I make my DX purchase.
 
It takes about 3.6V before a faint red glow is seen, however, it will not come to full brightness until supply hit 5V.

Recved mine got the same as yours same model number but I ordered the 70mw without the heatsink and recived the 100mw one with the heatsink.

Wonder if these are defective units as they have 50mw writen on the lable but are listed as 100mw at Newwish
 
That could be possible, however, mine "seems" to be more than 50mW. Still a great value!

Hehe... obviously i wont be drilling holes in the TEC, but in the aluminium heatsink block around the laser. By the looks of it, there already are 3 tapped holes in there, but those are in the middle.

By making holes near the edges, it's possible to sandwich the TEC between a big heatsink and this modules, sercuring it with nylon bolts (metal ones conduct a lot of heat and thermally short the TEC).
 
This heatsink is quite substantial and has a lot of thermal mass. Unless you plan on continuous duty with a high current, I don't believe a TEC is required (certainly not with the stock LD). I had it on for about 5 minutes and didn't notice any significant change in the module temperature. But, if this is for the enjoyment of experimenting, have at it!
 
I got mine to yesterday. Exactly the same model as on the picture. I tried mine yesterday but was unable to make anything smoke, even if i turned up the power to maximum. I re-adjusted the focus on the module to make a pinhole sized dot, and then i managed to make black electric tape to smoke, but not cut it. So I wonder if this really is 100mw, it seems more like 50mw (which was on the package!).
 
What's up with the label saying it's a 50mW? :-?

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the other one was $17.something, this one was ~$30... I bought one the day they showed up on their site, and am still waiting. I was thinking of picking up the green one too, but decided to wait a bit on it. They don't even know if it's a 50mW or a 100mW yet... ;D

I'm sure the heatsink is fine for continous operation by itself really. The only point of TEC for me is to run the laser below ambient temperature, increasing power output for a given current, and prolonging diode life.

There is no data on it, but juding by the size and fins on the heatsink, i'd say it would be around 10K/W as long as air can flow around it a bit. The fins are actually in the wrong direction when using the beam horizontally, but that shouldn't matter that much.

I ordered the $17 one and got sent the $30 one
The newwish part number is for the >100 mw but in the corner of the lable in pen it says 50mw.
Im running it off 4AA and it runs cool and very bright.
When focused it cuts good 3M electrical tape very quickly.
