I just thought of something: the inside of the Spartan is white. Since white has the highest albedo of other colors, it should reflect light and heat back at the innards of the laser. If the inside was colored black, wouldn't it absorb heat and pass it to the host so it could further fufill it's heatsink duties?
It doesn't matter what color the inside is (the battery compartment is indeed covered with a thin layer of white plastic) beacuse te light goes straight to the lens and after that out of the case (its a laser diode after all, not a flashlight bulp). And no, black would be worse than white if there was any excessive light leaking inside the host because it would absorb the light and heat up the host a lot faster than white that would just reflect all the light off (cause a infinite mirror like effect inside the host).
