What do you all think is really going on here? Is this just woo woo or what?

Dr Quantum - Double Slit Experiment - YouTube

A much longer NOVA documentary on quantum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBrsWPCp_rs

Late edit: Another good video regarding quantum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkkIvp71P1c

A historical account from 1985 of the long standing debate between Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein regarding the validity of the quantum mechanical description of atomic phenomena and observation of quantum states with respect to the uncertainty principle and quantum entanglement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFvJOZ51tmc

You find this kind of thing uninteresting and spamful? I don't, take a look at these, they are well worth a watch.

Don't be so quick to jump, Mr Lander.

Quantum physics is a legitimate field, and the double slit is a valid, reproducible experiment. There are already a few threads on this subject. Diffraction gratings are a real-world use of double-slit.

Alright, sorry I got ahead of myself.

Sometimes I feel like an entangled electron with this young gentleman, if I spin one way, he spins another :p

Don't blame greenlander. It's become a habitual response for all of us with laser projects threads lately :p

Yea, what is that about? I don't understand individuals who choose to come to threads they don't like or agree with and keep adding to them themselves. To get back on topic, how many of you are familiar with this stuff, the double slit experiment and the implications it provides? I've been following this science for so long I have almost received the impression it is common knowledge but then find people who look at me with deer in the headlight eyes when I bring the subject up with fellow engineers.

The double slit experiment is pretty strange indeed, but that video are full of misleading information.

He says something like "just by observing" the pattern changes. Well, observing individual particles require us to interact with them. So they are absolutely not unaffected by the fact that they are picked up by a sensor, and in that sense it is not so unexplainable that the pattern changes.

Basically, this experiment is just a real life consequence of the uncertainty principle which requires the light to bend when going through the slit because it lets us too finely know the position of the photons, and the fact that light and small particles can act as a wave and overlap.

It's like gravity, we have all the equations and laws to describe how it works, we just don't exactly know why or by which mechanism it works.

Your fedora is showing.

Really interesting, nicely explained. Makes me think back to my quantum courses though... Brrr!

Full of? The only one I found (so far) is the one you mentioned, it's not purely the observing that affects the electrons but actually the interaction that is necessary to measure them. Other than that, I think it's pretty okay? (It's waaay past bedtime though... Something might be flying over my head ;) )
EDIT: I've only watched the first video, not 100% sure whether you were meaning one of the others.

If the double slit experiment doesn't blow your mind, try the quantum eraser delayed choice double slit experiment:

Delayed choice quantum eraser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What are the implications?

After looking into that with more than a cursory glance and some indepth pondering, read this next:

http://www.science20.com/alpha_meme...ly_effective_through_quantum_physics_ii-86125

Read that article with a sincere open mind and your world will be changed, if you haven't already understood it from your own experience. This is why the Pauli-effect, or why the belief in a particular outcome for an experiment can actually change it:

http://www.princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Pauli_effect.html

OK, if by chance anyone has taken the time to investigate those links and read them in their entirety without a complete rejection, look into this next:
