Last night I had the opportunity to use my 203mW 405nm to annihilate a house keeper spider. WOW man that was cool.

I know what your saying , but I live in Florida and those things get as big as mailboxes down here........

It didn't take much I zapped it, it moved for a while got confused and then smoked out....... I hated to finish it off that way
but the Mrs was thrilled.

Please be kind in your responce I love that lady so what she says goes :-*

Fair play.. I know it's harsh but they are ugly bastards and they do get friken huge... Don't know if I could bring my self to do it though :D

I'm sorry but I don't approve of this.

You don't get to choose whether an animal should die or not, not even because of how "pretty" or "ugly" they are. If you think like that then most dogs should live and platypus should all get exterminated...

That spider suffered like hell, imagine a 100 terawatt laser was pointed to your eyes and slowly penetrated into your brain. Not cool, huh?

I knew that their would be hearts to mend and I'm sorry little spider. :'(
Ah..... a dog is just a little different than a spider and if there was a black widow or something lurking in your kids room
what the heck else a shoe commin down like at 1000psi. (It a laser forum) common niko how many ants did you do in with your
magnifying glass I allready know you ate bugs in your orange juice you could of stuck your finger down your throte. ;) ;) ;) ;)

0 ants. I never kill bugs, not even if they are inside my room. If they are too close to me or bother me in some way I just grab them with hygienic paper and put them out on the wall outside the window so they can go to the garden. Spiders almost always stay just in one corner (it's not like I've got spiders and bugs all around my room) and they don't bother me at all, I let them live their lives until they die and I clean off the web.

The bugs in my orange juice were already dead, when I realized I had drank a lot of them it didn't bother me at all :P I knew they were going "out" the next day :)

PS: And you can be sure there is not going to be a freaking black widow on your kids' bedroom. You don't find tarantulas trying to steal your gruyere cheese.

ALL human beings draw a line through their hierarchy of life.  Actually there are several "lines" but this should be enough to suffice.  We ALL make a hierarchy of life forms.  On this hierarchy we draw a line.  Above this line the life is sacred.  Below this line the life is not sacred.  Anything which makes it above our personal line must be protected.  Anything that falls below our personal line is vulnerable to death by our action or influence.

If you write down your own hierarchy you will be able to figure out why you placed the line where you did.  Remember to include ALL forms of life you can think of.  Once you have your hierarchy listed, think about your personal "lines."  What can be killed and what should be protected?  Why does that particular life form fall on that side of the line?

Does it have a "face"?
Is it "cuddly"?
Is it "ugly"?
Was it raised as a food source?
Does its "look" make me uncomfortable?
Does it effect my quality of life?
Is it a pest?
Does it do us harm?
Does it react to its environment?
Can I hear it "scream"?
(Other questions will probably occur to you)

You will probably have to redo your hierarchy as you make these decisions.  However, it is a good exploration of what kind of enculturalization you have been subjected to.

Some "lines" come from society.  Some come from personal experience.  Some seem to come out of nowhere.  Some of them are actually "hard wired" into our human brain (or at least the tendency toward them is).

Last question for after you're done with your hierarchy--

Why is YOUR line and/or hierarchy more appropriate than my line and/or hierarchy?

Peace,
dave

P.S. Then look up "ethnocentrism" ;)

I use my airsoftgun to kill the spiders here. It gets killed immediately. I don't want to use my 200mW red, because

1) 200mW wouldn't kill the spider immediately.
2) Focusing would be hard, and it would suffer like hell. Also I'd get really close to it, which I don't like.
3) I'm not using lasers as weapons. I handle lasers as weapons, though.
4) It would be... plain evil.

FYI, I "suffer" from Arachnophobia. :-[

I have to admit that when I was younger I used to kill bugs with my magnifying glass. Now though when I see a spider I am very careful to pick it up and move it outside.

What about a cockroach?

My wife's hierarchy is humorous to me, because it is my job to do the "killing."  Spiders must be carefully picked up and carried outside.  However, any ants in the house require a full scale attack using chemical weapons up to and including a potent nerve agent!

You should have seen what I had to go through after she found a tick in the dog's bed  :o

dave

Very interesting, dave, looked it up:

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnocentrism (of course...)

Ethnocentrism often entails the belief that one's own race or ethnic group is the most important and that some or all aspects of its culture are superior to those of other groups. Within this ideology, individuals will judge other groups in relation to their own particular ethnic group or culture, especially with concern to language, behavior, customs, and religion.

Now:

Any lifeform

Mosquitoes (if there are 20 individuals in a single room and I'm one of them, all mosquitoes will come after me, it's personal).
Humans.

That's because you killed their cousin. Remember Karma . . . .

"can i hear it scream" pushes people away from lobster (i believe) because when you drop them in boiling water they emit a screaming sound.
lobsters are incapable of making noise though. i don't think they have lungs. and being a shelled creature, we are unsure if they have pain receptors.

i had a friend that you'd think would be kind to bugs but when she sees one she screams and slams it with her hand as hard as she can.

Nicko,

I like Dave is in charge of the killing of the offending endos I would prefer not to be.
Being in the age of 35-40 years old believe me if it is fast and scary looking it has to die.
She'll keep me up all night if I miss. Sorry for the laser, but It was meant to be a point of intrest to the group. If this offends you then I won't post on my methods of destuction.

Now on the black widow subject they are the most common in my neck of the woods. I can't take the trash out without checking under the handles :-/. I hope you can understand my nubness to the arachnid family. I've even owned spiders for pets. I would not pick those sucker up for nothing , even though it is my God given right to use a whole can of raid for one spider I usually go about with "taking it outside" to my neighbors yard ::) I again appologize in advanced for the seemingly numbness to nature.

No, man, it does not offend me at all; you're free to write anything you want. The Internet is free!!

My family differs in that way, my mom usually kills these insects before I tell her to just throw them out of the window.
I didn't know about your environment :P, I have tons and tons of mosquitoes here and I hate them...but I'm faster than them ;D

I usually go about with "taking it outside" to my neighbors yard

Is his last name "Flanders"?

Obviously, you're under the "internet line."

Below the line life is not sacred.
