Sorry if this is a dumb question :-[ but will the NOVA Shields safety glasses (rated for 473nm) work as protection when playing with the bluray diodes (405nm based on the site from jayrob)? I assume that they would but just wanted to be sure. How long do these group buys usually take, I can't wait to get the assemblies

I don't think they do since the wavelengths are too far off. But I wouldn't worry about eye protection since these aren't high powered diodes. As far as I've read, most of them only get up to 10-15mW.

ive glanced over the posts here and i dont see any thing on the power of the BR Diodes. do we know what the output of the diodes are? not that it really matters to me because once i get paid im getting on board the GB but i was just wondering the output

On the site they said the output was between 10 and 20mW when they tested one, but that results would vary. I don't think it would go much higher though.

Don't worry it won't be long before Blu-Ray burner diodes drop in price. Like I mentioned in the other thread, laptops are coming with Blu-Ray burner drives and the competitor HD-DVD is already dying out of the market.

Yeah, but isn't HD-DVD dying out a bad thing? If there was competition, the prices would drop faster..

I don't know.. Unfortunatelly, if true, this means we will never see cheap fast HD-DVD burners, which could provide us with the same power for less money..

I would prefer only one format to deal with. BR burners will drop in price just as fast without competition...just like DVD burners did.

These diodes are strange sometimes. They vary in power from one to another..
Some people get almost 20mW at only 40mA, while others get only half as much..

My first one was weak from the start, untill i pushed it, then it was good for a while, untill it died.
My second one was very powerfull at 39mA, untill i repositioned it, and it lost 3/4 of it's power..


They are EXTREMELY sensitive!

I managed to kill two so far, which is why i'm in this GB now.
This is what i learned:

- Use as much ESD protection as you can, make yourself a grounded wrist strap..
- DO NOT use a lab PSU for powering the driver circuit! A power supply puts ES and D together, since it provides static electricity a path to discharge.. Use batteries for power and a capacitor directly on the LD.
- Tantalum capacitors are better than electrolytes for this..
- Do not drop your LD even from a low heigth, as you may find it suddenly completelly changed it's electrical characteristics..


I really hope i get better luck with the next two.

That 6x sounds very impressive... If it came down to 100$ eventually, that would be great..
I just hope they don't start making those flat BR laser chips..

Yup, those flat chips are a bummer. I am guessing by the end of the year these will plummet in price. As faster burning ones are made, of course the price of the slower burning ones will drop. I would be very happy with 100mw's of violet.. ;D

There is internal competition with one format... LG will sell it for $400, then LiteOn will well it for $380... and so the cycle starts

That is exactly what I meant. I should have said BR burners will drop in price just as fast without competition from another format. DVD burners did drop in price due to competition between manufacturers, and of course there is only one format. This is why I believe we will be harvesting BR burners by the end of the year..... ;D

I've seen what this reader BR can do at only 39mA (for 30 seconds untill i touched it), and i wouldn't mind having 100mW or more of the same!


So i really hope you're right.. That 6x sounds wonderfull. 250mW pulsed... I wonder how much CW that would be...

Well, that would definatelly be a safe CW rating, probably even the one specified in the datasheet..

But the reason i was asking is, because the Sony GB diodes had similiar ratings, and are still being sucessfully pushed to 200mW... Well, the good batch of those is rated 120mW CW, right?


Oh well, i can dream..

But 80-100mW of blue ray would be great! Who wouldn't want to have that?



EDIT: I just read Dr_Lava is getting more than 100mW with a 4x Blue Ray burner!
