Do you trust DIY lasers?

Thanks Jay for showing off my new toy! You DO build the best pocket lasers!
Keep up the SUPER work!

Thank you Grant! I am very glad that you feel that way. :) (takes a bow)

But realistically, in all fairness, we all know that there are several builders who are all building very high quality DIY type lasers...

Each style may appeal to different individuals depending not only on quality and host style, but things like battery capacity of the host, options for rechargeable, etc...

If you have not tried or seen Kenom's Kryton barrels, they are the best host for DIY! (IMO) The diode gets pressed directly into the Kryton head for excellent heasinking, and of course, the finest looking CUSTOM host out there! 8-)

There are so many nice lasers now! I kind of want to buy one of IgorT's builds too! :D

Not pushing away any customers ;D... but just being realistic.

Thanks again for being very generous with your praise! :D

Believe me I understand perfectly well there are other folks who are building SUPERIOR quality products. Having built a laser with my father in 1969 (Today it is probably even more difficult.), I understand what is required for someone to undertake such a project. And my hat is off to each and everyone that has the talent and patience to personally build such a product. Simply by chance, your name just happened to be the one that I came across first on a Dogpile search for a Blu-Ray laser that I needed for a project. At that time, I had never heard of the LPF or anyone else for that matter. After seeing your TOP NOTCH workmanship, I decided to work with you on my other requirements. I know some of my ideas may seem far out at times, but you have been patient and supportive to experimenting and I believe we will have a 600mw Side Button 'Pocket Pal' laser soon. As for the rest of you GREAT experimenters, I only wish I had the time and understanding wife who would allow me to have a lot more lasers. She thinks I have far too many toys now.

Ahhh ha ha... the wife. ;D

For sure you have a good one Grant. In learning of some of your hobbies besides lasers, she must be a really good one! :)

I'm glad I've got a good one too. But I sure know what you mean when you say that she thinks you have too many lasers already! ;D

Hi all, I just registered today - but I've spent hours reading over the past week.

I'm a 39 year old network administrator working for local government.  I'm formally educated as an EE, but I don't get NEARLY enough component-level tinkering done these days!

I was surprised when I hit this thread today - based upon the reading I've done here, and research elsewhere - I find some of ixfd64's assumptions to be surprising.
I won't go so far as to say he's wrong, but his assumptions are certainly opposite the opinions I've formed about this hobby!

That said, I without hesitation voted YES - but I won't be buying, I'll be building my own.
I just finished my first one with a diode & rckstr driver from Stonetek - it rocks & I'm hooked!  :)

If it wasn't for the fact that I build all my own diode-based lasers, I would not hesitate to buy from members such as IgorT, jayrob, daguin, or Kenom. So many happy customers can't be wrong. :D

If I would be selling lasers I would call them switch lasers ;D
