I don't leave them in, because I have stupid people around. I heard it can fry you diode, not to sure about that but I don't want to risk it, also your batteries last longer if you take them out and put them in the fridge, mine go in the veggie crisper :)

i generally leave the batteries in the handhelds i use often when at home. there are no children here usually. when my grandson visits he gets good instruction on laser safety.
