I was looking at the box one, i dont see how the straight cable would work thoe

The cable one basically has the control electronics mounted in the plug. If you are looking for a preoffesional device, d go for the pro, personally because i have one and use it ALOT, it has never caused me problems, even when my computer crashed it just kept going and going. As for software, take a look for JS_DMX, it will control the DMX Usb pro, nd will give you enough sliders for most purposes. DMX is just and adressing protocol designed for DJ's, and some theatres. A few theatres still use the old type of lighting control, cant remember the name right now.

I use an AfterGlow Aurora 2 USB to DMX unit from www.nextec.co.uk
Excellent little device and comes with free control software too

The software I use for my 350mw RGY scanner is Abuelites.

My Scanner uses a total of 10 DMX channels.

The DMX channels are set as following: channel Function

1 Mode: 0-69 laser off; 70-209 sound mode; 210-255 DMX mode
2 Pattern
3 Effect channel: Strobe
4 Effect channel: Point speed
5 Horizontal movement*
6 Vertical movement*
7 Zoom*
8 Colour: 1-39 yellow; 40-79 red; 80-119 green; 120-159 original pattern; 160-199 colours of the pattern are changed
9 Reset: above 200 (shortly)
10 Colour effect channel: 1-79 draw (increasing) part of the pattern; 80-119, the same, automaticallywith increasing speed; 120-255 change colours.
