DIY Laser Cutter Project

Re: My holiday project - DIY Laser Cutter

Hi from NZ, this is a fantastic read.

I have built 2 x CNC routers and have been using them for the past 2x years or so. Mainly cutting Acylic/timber.

I want to move on and start doing other stuff and have been looking at building a laser cutter.
Your build has been a great read and has answered some of my questions.

I'm probably going to break down one of my CNC's and use the parts etc....

At the moment I'm just in the stage of reading about the CO2 laser tubes and PSU's. I'm glad I saw the part about where you mention about a DSP controller !!. I just thought you could buy a CO2 tube and PSU and away you go cutting or engraving, didn't give it a thought about controlling the power output !!

Have included a picture of the CNC

Regards
Kevin

Re: My holiday project - DIY Laser Cutter

Cool build! I love reading about other peoples work, great to see yours :)

If you have any more questions, let me know.

As for my cutter, I've made (once again) some huge changes, but I'll wait till I have something to show for it :)

Technically you don't need the DSP... but it is nice to have...

Re: My holiday project - DIY Laser Cutter

Yeah, I plan on doing work for other people with mine, so a DSP was kind of a good option as it'd dramatically reduce setup times.

Re: My holiday project - DIY Laser Cutter

I cant wait to see what all you have re designed this time.. Last remake was spootacular crappy it was all too heavy for the size. Still keeps me interested. Love what you have done and love the cnc mill pic MCDesign...

Re: My holiday project - DIY Laser Cutter

Yeah, weight was 1 issue, but the bearings were another. The ball bearings inside the bearings had a tendency to bind on each other, creating "notchyness". This wouldn't be noticeable on a normal CNC mill, but with a laser, it creates obvious wobbles in the lines.

Re: My holiday project - DIY Laser Cutter

Well, I'm now completely broke again .. but something big is in the works, quite literally :D

And no, I didn't just buy an entire completed unit, still gotta have some element of DIY!! :)

Hah, I wish! Although I'd probably prefer a heli, more places to land :)

Re: My holiday project - DIY Laser Cutter

Dont forget the crew you can drop off to make the LP...

Bigger than A0, it has a 1200x900mm cutting area :D
