DIY: Compact Tec "Peltier" Module :D Very Happy with the result!

Hey guys. I was looking for good heatsinking options for my labby heatsink, and for a very low price of $6.53, i have built a very compact and low temperature producing TEC "peltier" Module

It consists of 3 layers... The TEC, the heatsink, and the fan All of which are 40mm x 40mm

I chose for parts

TEC1-12706 (pack of 10) - $2.57 ea
Fasttech SKU 1138300 - $1.23 ea
Pack of 6 NMB-MAT 40mm Fans - $2.83 ea

I connected the heatsink and TEC with Arctic alumina, and the fan and heatsink with epoxy

The flash on my camera makes all the small details and blemishes pop out, but in real life it looks very clean besides the alumina smudges :)

It needs at least 3 amps @ 12v for the fan to run at full speed, 2 amps is fine for low power diodes.

At 3 amps, the peltier get SUPER cold and the heatsink only gets warm. Put it on my lab heatsink for a couple seconds and it sure does cool!

I have materials to make two more of these! If you want one i would be happy to build you one!

Overall i think this was a really cool project that will find many uses in my laser future!

How much would you offer? I could also wire it however you want as if you wire them separately you can make sure the fan runs at full speed :)

Maybe I can ship you all the parts at no charge and you can build it yourself because you will probably make it cleaner :D

All you will need is thermal adhesive and epoxy...

I have a beast of a fan I can use, but I'd also love to have another just to compare fans. I would love to put them together. Just me know what to do. I'll pay for the parts and shipping if you want and I'll see what I can do with it. Looks like a fun project.

Yea its really cool. I don't have a thermometer but it condenses water at 3 amps

Don't know if the cooling is enough for 4amps though

You can do modifications :)

I will total up parts and shipping when I get home.

$10-15 shipped for one sound good? Would be neat to use in a few experiments with these 520 and 445 diodes :)
 
That's a really dinky heatsink, usually when I mess with 40mm TECs I use a chunky CPU heatsink. Also removes the need for the screamer 40mm fans. Much more expensive though.

It's fun to drip water on them and make little ice sculptures if you're bored.

I know. I was going for a compact square module that gets the job done. Not meant to 100% utilize the TEC.

The best balance between heat dissspation on the hot side and cooling on the cold side is at 2.5 - 3a

Its not meant to be perfect. Its meant to be small...

And it still gets cold enough to condense water...

I think the heatsink is a little too small. Although you have a high flow fan, the space between the fins are too small area wise so the airflow is restricted. Just a point to remember when mating heatsinks with fans. ;) I do have a tunnel style copper heatsink with fan that I used with a TEC to make something similar but you gave me an idea for an application. :beer:

That arctic looks pretty nice for $6!! Let me know how that works out. Till then I have some old pc I think I can use.

I am actually going to pass, I am looking for sub-zero Celsius. I want to see how cold I can get a green diode, I want <510nm.
