Did I Kill My Brand New 532 Module?

I just got my module that I ordered from nexbox360 in this thread and it was working perfectly. Then today I noticed one of the input leads on the driver was starting to come off, so I strengthened its solder joint and. While I had my iron heated up I removed the spring. Not thinking to much while the driver was clamped in the alligator clip of my helping hands I applied power to the module. Immediately I realized my mistake as a beautiful green beam did not emit but a few small puffs of smoke came from the driver. I removed the module from the clip and tried to fire it up again but got nothing. Next I desoldered the driver from the diode and attempted to test the driver with my test load. That confirmed the driver wasn't working.

How do I know if the diode is fried? And what driver could I use to power the module?
 





If it ain't broke don't fix it !

I am afraid you shorted the driver somewhere. It could take the diode to oblivion but hopefully it survives. You could solder another driver to the diode and check if it is still working.
 
Any suggestions to what driver I can use or would a Mohgasm or a Micro Boost driver (these are the ones that I have on hand) work? What current do you think these were running at?
 
No need for a boost driver for the ir diode. The ir diode is probably 1watt. 500mA is safe for a 100-200mW green. The Mohgash driver will work.

What is the pin layout of the IR diode?

I have a Mohgasm kit and don't know which resistors I need for around 500ma. If someone could give me what resistors equal what current that would be awesome. I searched some and did't get anywhere.
 
Most (all that I've seen) IR pump diodes are case positive.
1_____2
___3___

1: photodiode/not used
2: negative
3: case/positive

Start with <500mA and work up from there.
If you have some dead greenies, you may be able to use the driver from one of those.

The formula is 1.25/R=I

If you want .5A then R=1.25/.5=2.5Ohm

The diode must also isolated from the battery minus.
 
That's sounds bad, i hope it survives!! ghostdrive would also work.. ask nexbox if he knows how much current the diode can take..
 
Well I got my driver together (first time assembling a driver) and it was working. Got a little over .5A with the resistors I had. Soldered everything together and...

Nope, Must have killed the diode too. Oh well, It is going to be a while till my host is ready for a module anyway. Can't wait till nexbox360 gets more in stock!

Sorry for the lost of the diode. Can you see if it is 9mm diode ? There is 1 Watt 8mm ir diodes for sale in buy/sell section. But the chance for success is slim.
 
I thought about replacing the diode but couldn't get the back to unscrew. I ended up ruining it so now it will never come out.
