Curious about the Mensa test.

I have always tested between 135 and 180 (yes, some tests are really far out) on these online things.. I must have taken about 30 of them the past couple of years.
Personally I would say I am a fairly bright person overall but I am not exceptional. I am fairly good at juggling a lot in my mind at the same time and solving puzzles and such and have an overall good education from my school.
Several of my friends have tested between 120 and 150 but the numbers only slightly reflect how intelligent they appear in general and how well they do in school, nothing dramatically noticeable.

I have heard from a friend of mine who's parents are both members of Mensa that it is mostly about networking. If you are a member it is easier to get hooked up with different companies and private persons to do bussiness. Also, they aim to locate and teach "specially gifted" children seperately to help them develop and use their skills to the fullest.

Personally none of this really attracts me in any way.. it seems mostly like a snob-club for people who think they are special because they are slightly better at choosing the blue ball with stripes through it than some other people.

Lucky of you then, but if joining Mensa does help you in getting job, then I would consider it. Nothing for the moment of course but maybe in the future... btw, isn't 180 so damn high? Isn't it posible that you have get used to doing tests after doing 30 of them and you are scoring higher than you should? Not to doubt about your intelligence but 180 seems so damn high xD

Well you might not have caught it but just after that I wrote "(yes, some tests are really far out)", meaning some test are just complete rubbish and obviously not based on proper questions or parameters. 180 is extraordinary genius which I somewhat doubt I am xD
The REAL tests which seem genuine have all been from 135 to 150 which is already really high though.. As I mentioned I think IQ is overhyped a lot because I know people who score around 110 who are really bright and people who have score around the same as me who don't seem particularly intelligent.
I think they are mainly constructed to spot people who are really unique, like people who solve all the puzzles in 50 questions in less than 5 minutes and score 160 or something.

Well, I've never taken this that serious since I doubt the human intelligence can be measured in a simple abcd test. In my opinion this may test the logic capacity or other specific areas but never the "intelligence". what's the intelligence at all?

I took one once for real in an office because I have other "issues". It cost my parents a ton of money. I think I was between 120-130, don't remember, could have been higher. Anyways, I agree. These tests shouldn't be used for intelligence. I mean I was being asked history questions that I never learned in school, come on!

180 is a crazy high result - no ordinary iq test can rate you at 180 even if you answer all of the questions correctly within the available time. I dont there there are any major tests where you score higher if you complete the test faster than the time set for it, so getting everything right would give you a result like '150 or more'.

It's a little bit more complex than just a test. Intelligence in this context means 'general intelligence' (g), which is a psychogical measure that, more or less, means brightness or smartness (as most people would interpret those terms).

The score on a typical iq test correlates about 90% with general intelligence - the tests are designed to do work that way. IQ tests only sample a subset of mental abilities though, and it is possible that people are exceptions in the relation between iq and g.

That is exactly what I said Ben, the tests which gave me those results were completely pathetic. Many of them seemed like "fun quizzes" where it would basically say you were a genius if you managed to finish it with no mistakes. They weren't even timed those ones so obviously they were bullshit.

The consistent results I have had have been the low 140s and I seriously distrust anything which says more than 150 for reasons both you and I have given.

One time I cheated on one of them just to test what the maximum possible was. I used my e-mail to take the first test, scoring 142 and then wrote down all the correct answers, then did it again with my other e-mail and answered the 40 questions in about 30 seconds.. it gave me 150.
Apparently that was the maximum you could get on that test.

Online tests are finicky at best - they can give some indication, and can be fun to try. Never count on any real results if you ask me.

There is one thing to look out for: there are a number of online tests that offer you to pay for a more detailed result report but give you the numerical iq for free. I've heard these tests overestimate iq by tens of points just to sell more reports on people that think they did exceptionally well.

One interesting test for those who want to try: http://iqtest.dk/main.swf

Its a Ravens-matrices like test, and it scores up to 140. Don't count on anything over 130 to be accurate though, as that will depend on just getting one or two questions wrong in the whole thing. The picture tasks look like they have more to do with spatial ability than with general intelligence, but tests like these have proven to give very good correlation with general intelligence. Also, they dont depend on prior learned skills like language or even more that the most basic calculus.

Yeah I have tried a few of those too.. but I would never pay to have some stupid online test tell me about my personality xD

What do you mean it scores up to 140? I have done it in Danish and it gave me 148 cause those picture pattern things are what I am really good at. I posted the link early in this thread too.
It must go up to about 160 because I think I got 1 or 2 wrong.

My mistake, this one goes a bit further indeed with the 40 questions. There was a shorter similar test somewhere before, with about 20 and a maximum score of 140 if you got all of them right.

8/18

(ok...but im on moda this day, havent slept the night and was instead learning for exam ;))

and how do you explain items no 6 and 9 on spanish test?
6. it's just a 5 points line moving around the square. Each picture it jumps 2 blank points

9. 4 points line moving around the top right corner 4*4 square inside the big 5*5 square. Each picture jumps 1 blank point.
