Yes I see red just fine for anything within about 30 yards. And no I wasn't kidding. All the major approved sights I've seen (us sold) are all under 5mW, I think my sig registers at about 3.7mW last I saw. Doesn't mean you can't fashion one for yourself that's greater, who are we kidding? It's LPF!
Anything farther I use irons or a wide area scope for. I'm mostly a handgun guy though. Rifles are fun, but a bit excessive for a lot of things. My .44 is great for most anything, specials in the house have had an excellent stopping power along with .357 mag. And .44 mag for close hunting.
Lasers are excellent for quck close aiming at non eye level, I agree. but I trust the irons a lot more for anything greater than about 10 yards without a very well aligned sight- in which case I'd still prefer irons and some cover. With practice you can level a firearm in the blink of an eye. It's all just dependent on the situation you're in frankly.
