Coolest thing to do with a 5 mW red????

If you look at my signature, it says I'm waiting on a 50 mW greenie.

So until then, I'm stuck with a red "pointer". So, what can I do with it? I've shone it through firework store glasses, and I've made a, well, I don't know what to call it!

It's basically an altoids tin with a spring from a "click" pen and a small mirror attached to it. It makes cool circles/ovals.

What else can I do?

Really not many cool thinks to do with a 5mw red.
 
You can shut off some streetlights. Look up how to do it.

You can also modify it into a 150mW+ burning beast!
 
Get yourself a lab coat, take it to the NIF, introduce yourself as "Doctor" (whatever), sneak into the pulse generation room, unhook the fiber from the master oscillator (it's an IR laser that's on a standard 19-inch rack), shine your 5mW red into the fiber, and see what happens.

If you get taken away, be sure shake your fist and scream that your "master plan" has been "foiled".
 
Point it at the tracking status of your 50mW green, maybe the light radiation holds the secret to faster mail from china. :crackup: Or you could try for a beamshot.. i captured a beamshot from a 5mW red with some smoke once... no doubt unimpressive but it was there. :D

I think I will do what styropyro's video shows. I have a few questions about it:

1.What brand hammer should I use? I'm looking at this one, it's a sledgehammer, but are there any other suggestions?

2. He hit the pointer three times with the hammer, if I use the sledgehammer, will it take less hits to achieve the same results?

3.Where should I hit the pointer exactly?

4. What brand cylindrical plastic bin should I use? I'm looking at this one, because the reviews say it is good, but is there any other ones I should use?

5.styropyro just threw the pointer in the cylindrical plastic bin, but I'm afraid of damaging the diode, especially after I just went threw all that work hitting it with a sledgehammer.
