contemplating a 20W 808 portable build!

hmm, I have been thinking about doing a somewhat portable 20W build using a 20W 808nm diode bar. Reason, portable cutting/engraving power!

My idea stems from an article about an art restorer that built a nd/yag pulsed laser gun for cleaning paintings.

Of course building something like this requires massive safety and I am WELL aware of the risks of building something this powerful. I have worked with 1Kw level lasers before.

The diode bar in question is contact cooled, ie copper heatsink and or TEC cooled.

Idea, or pipe dream?
Anyone care to share their 2 cents..feel free!

Hmmm, your avatar is AT LEAST interesting.
Just my 0.02 cents.

Ontopic:
The diode bars are known for having the worst beam profile out there. Some say that with a FAC and optic fiber you can get 'appreciable' results.

offtopic again:
I remember you. From one of my earlier posts, about LM317, 18650s and 445 diodes. Glad to see you again

hmm, ok.. maybe not a great idea. Just contemplating. I'll dig a little more to see what I can come up with. Idea still is in my head.
My avatar. You mean my wife ^_L
Yes, I just got married to a Beautiful Korean lady! :) sorry I was just teasing with the pic. That's not my wife. :p

Hmmm isn't 2W enough for your purpose? I've seen 3W 9mm IR diodes too, but thats all. After that you rather going to CO2 (expensive and big) or I dunno...

Lol, when I readed "I just got married to a Beautiful Korean lady!" I thinked "fuuuuuuu... he will be angry on me".. oh well.

nah. I actually got married last week in Seoul. Paper marriage. This summer is the actual ceremony in Canada! Then in Winter we'll do one in Seoul. She is beautiful! 5 years of love and going strong!

I was hoping to go to 20W with an square lens for focussing purposes. Oh well.

Hmmm.. CONGRATULATIONS DUDE! :D

Oh yeah.. you're very lucky. Happy for you :D:D:D
I hope I reach there too.. I'm near 1yr 7 months already. :p

@ontopic
20W isn't a little too much? I vote for the optic fiber, or another source of coherent light.

Thanks. Indeed I am lucky. She's the kind of woman that wants to have a real aventure. We're thinking Costa Rica or Amazon. We've also got friends in Thailand as well we can go stay with as well.
I just ran the specs and divergence of the bar. Right you are.

If you head to Brazil (south, not Amazon) you will come near my city :p Not a real adventure IMO. :)

Not cheap, but there are C-mount IR diodes that have FAC lens already, so it may be more easy to build a handheld (also if big) unit of at least this power ..... at the moment, i remember aerodynamics(something) ebat member had some of them for sale in the past, and for sure they are better than 9mm TO cans and bar.diodes ..... let me see if i find something again.

EDIT: strange, the user i was referring (aerodynamics2006) have actually no items for sale ..... ah, well .....

I've found another pair of users, one have 2W diodes with FAC lens, and the other have 5W diodes without FAC (in this case, you need to correct the beam, for get a good shape at the burning point) ..... anyway, i have never buyed items from these 2 ebay users, so cannot say you if they are good sellers or not.
