Contacts?

I've heard from a few sources that if you wear contacts, they act as safety from lasers. Personally, I think it's bull. Anyone have some input on this subject? I don't see how a clear lens can protect you from a 30 mw to the eyes.

It is complete nonsens - contacts pass visible light very well obviously. The average contact lens will offer no protection from 808 or even 1064 ifrared either. Contacts at the proper prescription will even make things worse for distant laser sources, as they make sure the light is focussed properly on the retina.

One possibe exception are specialty UV-protective contacts and blu-ray lasers, but i doubt they start blocking at ~405 nm already.

The only way contacts contribute to eye safety is by shielding from mechanical damage. Anything at high speed will go straight through, but they can potentially safe you from a very painful experience cause by, say, a little drop of solder flying around.

I have actually! I didn't measure it on my meter, but visibly there was no difference in power.
