Hey guys havent been here for a while :). Anyway I had to start using my desktop again after my laptop broke. Its Windows xp ( :( ) . Its a HP Media Center PC. Its browser is pretty slow even though I have lightning fast internet. Anything that needs Java runs very very slow. It freezes a lot. Ive done virus checks, no viruses. Used a registry cleaner, CCleaner, auto defrager. When you open a program and internet side by side its very slow. Any tips to make it faster?

Really appreciate it!

Try Opera. Opera has the fastest Java loading times. Chrome has the fastest HTML5 loading times.

How slow is your PC though? whats ur pc specs?

I hope this is what you mean:

Windows xp
Media Center edition
version 2002
service pack 2

Hp pavilion
AMD athlon 64 processor
3500+
2.19 GHz, 448 MB of RAM

My graphics card is old i think.

Format your HDD, re-install windows.

What do you mean format your HDD. Not a pro in this kind of stuff.

Thanks man. Its from one of my favorite episodes. Thats pretty much the look on my face when I read some of these n00bs questions.

Its not that tough, just takes a little time. You just have to make sure you have EVERYTHING thats important backed up. And you have to have ALL the drivers for the PC, and anything connected to it. Printer, ect. Make sure you have all your passwords backed up, and codes for wireless routers, ect.

The process of reformation is quick. Reinstalling, and setting things back to where you had them takes the longest time.

If your only issue is speed, you'd better off leaving it alone. A memory upgrade would help, and its easy.

My only issue is speed, seems kind of risky. Ok Ill do some searching on Memory upgrades. Isnt that a chip or something to increase RAM?

Your system RAM is low for Windows XP these days. It looks like you have 512mb but some is being reserved for integrated graphics.

You probably don't want to have any less than 1gb or you start using virtual memory all the time and that makes your computer really slow.

Reformatting your hard drive will also help, but I think if you got some more RAM it would slow down a lot less often.

If you want to upgrade your RAM, your system has one of the original Athlon64 processors, this means it uses regular DDR memory (not DDR2 or DDR3) you can probably find a stick of memory for cheap on ebay.

Example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micron-1GB-...104?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43ad8b5398

Wow super cheap, do you think it would improve the speed a lot just by itself?

Yes it will increase your speed. You need to look at the ram card that is in your computer and look to see if it is a PC 2700 or a PC 3300 if you get the same speed you can use them together, if they are different it will cause a conflict between the two.
I learned this the hard way.

I am using my phone currently since both of mine are down.
