Through the other thread I noticed that CNI makes 589nm handheld lasers, in both pen style and portable style. The interesting thing is that the maximum power CNI makes is 80mW for the 589nm version, along with how in the datasheet it says that the 589nm wavelength is much brighter than the 593.5 one. I haven't sent a request for the price but this really makes me wonder if it is worth the cost.
Here's a link to their portable laser section:
Laser pointer, handheld laser, 473 nm blue, 532 nm green, yellow, red portable laser.

Edit:
Quoted prices from Glenn/Scopeguy20 (on second page)
No, Sorry, the pens are tops 5 mW rated, here is the costs of the 589 nm lasers:

Pens:
GLP-589nm-0.6-1mW/Unit USD390.00

GLP-589nm-2mW/Unit USD455.00
GLP-589nm-5mW/Unit USD635.00

PGL III (Flashlight style):
PGL-III-C-589nm-5mW/Unit USD575.00

PGL-III-C-589nm-10mW/Unit USD615.00
PGL-III-C-589nm-20mW/Unit USD685.00
PGL-III-C-589nm-30mW/Unit USD760.00
PGL-III-C-589nm-50mW/Unit USD815.00
PGL-III-C-589nm-80mW/Unit USD945.00

Note: Costs are before shipping and PP fees (if used)
Now I am trying to find out if these are as stable as the other DPSS green, yellow or blue lasers...

I just got the word, these 589 nm's are more stable than the 593.5 nm ones were! Great news! -Glenn

Oh baby! I am buying one. That is awesome!. They also added that any of their laser can be made with adjustable focus at the bottom pf the handhelds page.

Yeah I noticed this some time ago and decided I'm getting one... check the signature...
:P

Yeah, I did a search on LPF and saw your signature, but it doesn't really clarify that you're going to get one.
I wonder if the difference in color is that noticeable

Probably not- but they have higher powers available.
It makes me wonder if the DPSS process is similar to the 593.5.

What sort of price do you think a low powered pen style would cost?

What sort of price for the 80mW is what I want to know. I am thinking $650.

Nice catch, man!

@RA_Pierce: This site has some info about the process involved in lasing at 589nm: 589 nm laser - Patent 6654395
(Check the patent's .pdf, it has figures showing graphs after the crystal is doped with several different ions). Still, it's not very clear.

Thanks for the link!
I can't really understand a lot of what is going on, but I read something about a 440 - 480nm pump source.
I don't know, though...

I read it too but it has too much chemistry and disorganized information. Maybe after some time if this laser is established they'll publish some more information. We could ask CNI directly, though.

If they have a laser in the 440-480nm range pumping this thing I would rip it apart to get to THAT laser
that can't be right.

I am in for whatever the most powerful pen sized one is. :D

Perhaps you guys should give Glenn/Scopeguy20 a PM since he is the one organizing the CNI group buys.
