CL-16RGY scanner review

yea i have sent him about 7 questions, and he has replied to them all withing 12 hours???

allright i have worked out the DMX, and this thing is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! in the instructions, there is a pattern called welcome, and the laser actually writes out welcome!!!!!!!!!! :oit's kinda hard to read, but it does say it!!! there was another pattern i found, and it shoots out R,G and yellow beams, not little circles, but the lasers beam!! it was kind of scary standing next to 140mw of yellow shooting out at random without goggles :D if you feel like you want more control over the laser, you have to get a DMX controller, it brings out all the fun ;) it's not very cheap though. i'll try get a long exposure photo of the welcome ;)

here's a pic ;) it's missing the "e" because i don't know how to change the exposure settings on my camera :-?. you can control the colour, speed, X and Y position etc; i chose yellow because it was easier to see.

That is pretty good Things. 8-) Can you turn ttl blanking on with that controller, I notices it is switched off, as the whole word is all joined up, using 1 beam?

Jase

the "welcome" thing is a preset pattern, the only things you can change are colour, speed, X and Y position and colour segmenting. i don't think you can turn on blanking on it?

I took mine apart tonight Things, just to have a look inside and to see what needs to be done to change the front cover. I have to say, it is very sturdy and very well put together, with the boards and laser modules on nice insulated platforms, and the wiring inside very tidy.

The green laser module is screwed directly from below, so acts as the datum, the red module, Dichro and the stepper scanner all have adjustment screws for alignment. They appear to have been factory aligned, then glued with what looks like some sort of Epoxy. Both lasers are very well heatsinked, with the green in a big finned aluminium block and the red is sinked in 2 ways.
The first is a mini ribbed heatsink over the end of the module (a bit like a mini aries or hulk) and secondly its mounting and alignment clamp is a jaw type clamp that fits snugly around the body and also seeme to be made of Aluminium.

The built in CPU type fan on the rear washes the whole housing with cool air.

I will take some photos tomorrow after some sleep.

i am having a few problems with the fan, it seems to stall every now and then. when it stalls, it makes ALOT of noise, vibrates like hell, and doesn't move any air. i don't know if it's the fan, or the driver driving it. i would replace it, but i would void the warranty if i did?

Dumb questions..........
1. What is DMX ? Is it a box that goes between a computer and the scanner ?
2. I presume it comes with software.
3. How much $$ ?

DMX is just a protocol for communicating with lighting fixtures.
it does come with software if you are talking about the one i got, but it doesn't output DMX signals, so in otherwords it comes with software, but it doesn't work till you register. that's pretty stupid if you ask me!
the one i WAS going to buy was $95AUS, but when i was on the phone, i heard that it had a really low framerate(time to send signals to the laser), and if your computer froze, the laser would too,no isolation(if laser failed, it could send 240/110 volts into your usb port) :o :othat would not be pretty ;D
so i just went with the next model up, and it has isolation, a built in microproccessor, and a pretty high frame rate. That one was $225AUS.
oh DMX controllers don't just have to be a computer thing, there is also board with the sliders on them, but they are over $600!
but this one connects to your usb port, and is powered from the usb port. Also remember that if you have a DMX in on your light, that has 3 pins, if you do decide to buy it, you will need a 5 to 3 pin converter($10)

oh and overall, i think this controller is awesome!!!! Actually for the software, i downloaded a program called JS-DMX, it's free, and works really well.

Sounds like an old xxx to serial converter to me. but that's just my age !!! Is this a piece of hardware plus a software package ?? Maybe all we need is an old serial port !!!
