Chinese Dept Store 20K kit

so do all the 20k kits come with a DAC/DMX board now?

It seems that they do, trouble is they do not seem to work with Popelscan, in fact my one will not work from the microphone or project the pre-programed beams

It is all on hold at the moment as I am sending the DAC board back for replacement and in the mean time waiting for some molex headers so that I can use Norm's DAC....very frustrating.....

Norm's DAC is up and running, I need to connect up the blanking before I can set it up properly but here is a photo of the present output.....It is not very exciting but is the culmination of about a months frustration and setbacks so I am pleased with it :)

so how much was that kit? and does it coem with glvoes and evrey thing to make a scanner?

LOL, the galvos ARE the kit... the galvos come with a DMX / DAC board, you supply lasers and enclosure.

I think it was circa $300 plus P&P My one came with a DAC that would not work with the software Iw anted to use, so you need to add around another $80 for another DAC, plus lasers, adaptors and lots of prototype board building.

Hi, can you comfirm thats the one you bought? (link in attachment picture since i couldnt write a LINK in a post...)

"COMPLETE 20K DMX SCANNER MOTOR SPEED KIT FOR LASER DISPLAY PROJECTORS" Item #: 1860
thats comes at 300$

And also does it come with a builtin DAC? (i read that it does but not sure if it actually worked or if i would need to buy a seperate DAC and if so which one would work with it?)

Ive been playing around a bit with lasers, but im all new to the scanners
i would just love to build one and this stuff from CDS is right in my price range :D

Situation report :) Yes that is the one, the picture and description are wrong though..... the new version looks quite different and does come with a built in DAC which they say works with pangolin, mamba and some other software packages, I cannot confirm this though.

It does not work with Popelscan which is why I have discarded the DMX/DAC board and replaced it with Norms DAC....which does work.

Hope that helps

Thanks for your prompt reply :D
but what type of connection does it use to connect to the pc? the printer port? :-?
Also is it TTL or analog blanking? :o

but what type of connection does it use to connect to the pc? the printer port
Yes printer port 25pin D connector both ends (not a standard printer cable but easily available).

Blanking on Norm's DAC is TTL, I don't know about the one that comes with the kit as I never tried it.

cool, thanks ;D ill look for such cable
and ill try to contact CDS for info on TTL

ill look for such cable
Male to female 25 pin D connectors.

CDS have at least now put up the correct manual for the kit (ignore the picture it is the old kit) I suggest you download it ;)

one last thing, i own a laptop with no parallel port, do you think a pcmcia paralell card would work? :-/
otherwise ill have to use my desktop pc but thats not a BIG problem

do you think a pcmcia paralell card would work?

I think you will need to ask CDS the question......
(they told me it would run from popelscan though....it didn't)

Don't get me wrong, I am having a lot of fun messing with this and it will do the job eventually, but I have pointed out to CDS that they should change the description as " just add your own laser" will not be enough to get it up and running.

Regards rog8811

i hope i get it working with either popelscan or some other software...

a little off topic but i just bought this enclosure, its just great, all aluminium and has vents 8-) its 350 x 80 x 180mm
that should be enough for everything

im just wondering what i could use like material to protect the opening (where the laser comes out..) simple glass wont do the trick i bet it would reflect no?
