Cheap, Portable Oscilloscope






It is about a lot more than the raw sample rate. Screen size, features, triggering, battery life, noise floor, input range, rigidity, user interface... I could go on all day. You can tell just by looking at it that actually using the thing will be next to impossible.
 
This is the case, it will be a bit tough to use. But, for the price, it's not terrible. It also helps that it comes with a waveform generator D: And I've needed one of those. Input range isn't too bad. -14V to 20V. But I don't think it's designed to be a DSO =p I think it's just designed to view waveforms for radio projects, etc. Not designed for high-end SMPS design XD

Anyway, thought some of you would find this interesting.
 
Eh, I'm not seeing it. It's just a novelty item as far as I can see. There is way too much wrong with it to even list.

I would much rather have a usable analog scope for $50. They have a whole lot of buttons and knobs for a reason - each one of them serves a purpose. Can you imagine typing an essay with a NES controller? This product would be even more frustrating.
 
My scope is essentially just like the one in the video, but made by tektronix. I dont remember the exact price but it was around $70 shipped I believe. I love the combination of analog scope and digital storage. I know its outdated and there are much much much faster scopes today but it blows my mind to be able to view signals on the sub-microsecond scale and with such prescision. Scopes capable of multiple ghz are just crazy and I hope to own one someday.

If you look around on ebay you can find a cheap scope that will fulfill most of your hobby needs. If I need to do something at a higher frequency (havent really needed to yet) I can just use a scope in the CS/EE department labs. You probably can too? I wont be able to afford a awesome new high bandwidth DSO for a few years :p
 
Eh. I got a Rigol DSO. I like it because it is still supported ^_^ Stopped working a few weeks ago. Sent it in, they fixed it for free. All it cost me was shipping there.
 
Most of these small cheap "mini scope" varities often lack a critical feature pretty much ANY oscilloscope should have, AC coupling. You can't read noise and ripple riding on a DC offset because scaling reduces noise to a few pixels or less
 
AC coupling seems like such a basic feature I just assume they would all have it! What are the designers thinking haha. It would be easy to do yourself, but that really should be integrated.

And wolf did you get that 50mhz rigol that you can upgrade to the 100mhz version for free by sending it some commands to the serial port?
 
Yes, I did get that one! Never bothered upgrading it though. Don't need it. May eventually though.
 
Be warned of kickstarter, its almost certain they will have delayed delivery times.
