Charger that Analyses Cell Quality

And here I thought it was a charger, not a discharger :p

It's probably both.

Most of the chargers that determine capacity do it by discharging the cell. I think that's how the Opus (dreamcharger) does it. IWIRE could probably confirm. It's certainly how my hobby chargers do it.

Yep, that's the way it does it. It will discharge and measure what it pulls out.
Then charge and measure what it puts in.
I can be charging one cell. Discharging another cell.
Testing resistance of another cell.
All simultaneously.
It does remind me of my balance charger for LiPo RC packs, only simpler.

The analyser discharges @ 500 ma to determine cell capacity.

I have checked the internal construction of this particular model I brought in . . .

and it looks well designed for durability.

I'm guessing it has some sort of heatsink, or perhaps even a fan, for cooling during the discharge?

The BTC3100 can do both simultaneously but it can also measure capacity whilst charging.
(Although there is a greater chance of error for charging capacity).

It's a great charger especially when it was on sale, although the resistance test is
quite inaccurate since the contact points have fairly high resistance.

I use it all the time. One of the most important features to me is the 2A charging current for slot 1 and 4.

I noticed that, it seems like the resistance values are higher than what they really are.
I also noticed they seem to be consistently off, so if I'm comparing cells I can find the cell with the lowest resistance, it's just not the actual resistance value of the cell.

I tested a few cells with the analyser tonight . . .

and I thought it was very accurate:

The 1st cells I tested were new Pany 3400 cells.

They tested at average of 45 milliohms.

Next I tried some 1 year old Pany 3100 mah cells with ~100 charging cycles.

They tested at average 100 milliohms.

Both of these test results were within about 10% of the DC resistance with my standard test load & multimeter.

Considering that the analyser does the test in about 1/4 the time . . .

I think the testing time it saves is worthwhile.

I agree, while not 100% accurate, the measurements seem consistent so the information provided is worthwhile.
Thanks for taking the time to verify and post your results.

If anyone comes across the BTC3100 for a good price again, post it please :) I can't believe I missed that GB :(

I'll keep a look out for the BTC3100. I just noticed your sig. No email or internet access for a week. Wow. If you throw in no phone service or people, that would be Heaven right there. :)

Edit: ask and ye shall receive :) http://budgetlightforum.com/node/33690

Today, I checked the final voltage on some Sanyo cells I was charging.

After the registered the "Full" display,

I pulled them out and checked the voltage.

It registered 4.22 VDC on both cells.
