Cajunlasers 400mW 532nm (Pics) EDIT: REMOVED THE WATERPROOFING LENS

Re: Just got my Cajunlasers 400mW 532nm (Pics)I got the laser25 hours after paying fo

I
Do you know if the "lens" in the very front is an IR filter, or just part of the water-proofing?

If it isn't an IR filter, then taking it out might help me as well.

I tested again tonight and got 296mW but then it started to drop off.

I'm not sure if it is or not, I actually ordered an IR filter today so I can check out some of these green lasers I have, to include the type you bought. I know if that front end cap lens assembly is removed your laser will have a much larger dot, and will be out of focus. Sometimes the inexpensive protected lithium cells' protection circuit can be a limiting factor - Fiddy removed the little PCB from one of those "4000“ mah 18650s already and it made a big difference in a 445 nm build he did. While he lost the protection, the battery was able to provide a higher maximum current draw to the driver. I suspect the quality control is less than desirable with the cheap batteries and you could have gotten a poor quality one. The only way to know for sure is try a name brand battery or maybe that trick Fiddy did. I might also have a 2600 mah 18650 trust fire I could send you to see there's any difference. Just PM me your name you ordered under so I'll have the address.

UPDATE:
If I had to guess I would think the lenses that are up front on these are either these, or much like these...

O-like is down at this moment... But I might not be explaining this well. In the front of my version, there is an aluminum cylinder with the lens in it, and at the very front of the laser, after you unscrew the aluminum cylinder/lens assembly, there is a flat, thin glass? piece. It is against a red o-ring and is probably either an ir filter or it may just be part of the waterproofing.

I don't want to pull it out if it is an ir filter, but I don't play with a ~300mW laser underwater anywhere. I'd gladly remove a waterproofing "lens" for a better beam/dot/mW.

Also, please don't think I blame you for any of this, I know this is just a laser you ordered and it came underspec. It is still pretty impressive at 296mW. But if we can get it closer to 400mW that would be great!

My experiences with Cajunlasers are always great, even this where you are offering to go above and beyond to try and make this right.

:-)

When I take my front lens off I see a white ring. I'll start now and take some pics, I'm actually going to do a full review of this laser today :)

I'll check out my older 400mw 532nm laser tonight, I think the lens assemblies might be the same. Now that you mention it, it seems as though somewhere I have read that the waterproof lens causes the dot to "blur" slightly. I agree with you - I won't be going scuba diving anytime soon with mine so being waterproof to me isn't a necessity. IR filtration however is important, it would be nice to know for sure.

I just took some shots of my laser with the end lens off.

Joe how does the laser beam profile look after removing the end lens off? Also, what does it read on the LPM?

Nice delivery time!

How have the men in black not kicked down Clif's door yet for selling this thing on his site?

They're for emergency use only ;)

Now if you unscrew that aluminum cylinder with the lens glued in, you will find a flat piece of glass under it with a red o-ring. It is either ir filter or (more likely) part of the water proofing.

Here is what I am talking about.

With this piece removed does is still produce a good beam / dot?

with the whole thing off, it's uncollminated. I can't speak for tsteel with just the one lens removed.

I haven't tried for fear of exposing myself to a bunch of ir. there is no way it is collimating or helping the dot though. It is FLAT.

Heck, I'll try it. Hang on...

So the short version is that it focuses fine without the glass in front.

Sorry for the iPhone pic!

However, removing it does set the lens lower (farther from the diode) and you lose the ability to focus PAST infinity.

It would only require a washer of the correct size and thickness to correct this if you needed to do so.

Be careful if you do this, I went to put the glass plate back in and over tightened it and cracked the glass plate. So if it was ir then I'll have to replace it.

Very nice! If you can shim it up with that washer, and your focusing ability is restored mostly, you can have a more powerful laser (hopefully it wasn't an IR filter) assuming you have no need for waterproofing..... :gj:
