Howdy all.

I thought I would devote a small thread to my recent projects.
First is a couple of handheld C-mount diode host's and the second is a 40W FAP diode bar 808nm.

Thank you to RHD for the two keyed host's with the diode mounts! I was able to get one of the original host's to work with some grinding and cramming. They are pretty nice with the key safety.

This is one of the two mounts for the diode. This diode is a low IR, low power so there won't be any beam pics on this one...sorry:beer:

On to the next host. I used the same internal mount for the diode. With a bit of tin foil to fill a very thin gap between the host and mount.
The host is a Romisen RC-A8. Neat looking host and i'm using a 16340 battery. The diode is a 635nm or 650nm, not sure because the diodes I got where not labeled for wavelength. The diode is being driven by a flex drive set around 750mA.

The lens is just a unlabeled one from my stock, more of a cover for now until I can figure out some single lens that will at least tame the output a bit(i'm not looking for a clean dot, just a blob at least:p)

On to the 808nm!
This one is a bit different.......

I picked up a couple of units that seem to have dead diodes. They still have great uses though.

I kept one completely intact and took apart the other to use as kind of a test platform.
As both the diodes were dead I needed to get another. Just as I was about to purchase one through fleebay I "GOT" one from an unnamed person.

(here's the bag it came in so the kindly person can perhaps recognize it and know it went right to work!:beer::beer:)

And the laser...the tape over the end is just a quick protection. I have a fiber coupler coming.

And Finally a video of it up and running. Please refrain from asking me if i'm wearing goggles and am aware of the dangers when using a high powered laser like this. I have done my reading and always have my goggles on.:beer:
Every experimenter must start somewhere and branch out beyond their comfort zone.(my NST was a real test of that;))

This is a short run. As you can see it diverges very quickly without a lens or the fiber. A good first run;)

I think I almost "got" that same 40W. :p

Glad you made good use of it. I'd have been to paranoid to do anything with it. :beer:

Love the cooling fan for it!

A little off topic, but is that one of the power supplies that Aixiz sales?

Thats a nice little setup there.. If you have a set of lenses from the a140 projectors
you can use the set for the red LED to expand and one of the other thin PC lenses
to collimate.

That output looks nice already, just waiting for some direction :eg:

What are you powering it with?
 
Thanks all for the input.:beer: I was excited to finally get something with a bit more 'punch' to it.

JLSE...I actually have a couple of the projector optics assemblies coming, so i'll put them in a mount and give it a try, thanks for the suggestion!

As for the PSU I must admit I was a bit embarrassed with my choice. It was cheap, I got them from fleebay, they are not 'completely correct' for the applications, they are not voltage regulated for my needs(except for the little pot on them), the TEC PSU is just the best I had around, it does work, the laser gets cold, the sink gets hot, it's not correctly regulated either, the PSU for the laser is 5V but should be 2.2V, I just started at the low end with the pot and turned it up a bit...and it lased! BLAM!
That is the long explanation of what i'v learned from reading and what i'm able to do with electronics. So far most of my experiments have worked with my special brand of electronics magic, but i'm always up for ANY INPUT to make these projects more scientific and Correct!

I was barely able to cram the 10 gauge wire into the PSU's but with some pliers and smashing I was able to screw them into the terminals.

Well the only other simple alternative ive seen is a re-wound MOT.. Ive got a
60W and a few lone bars yet to be determined for output, but im sure just
as power hungry as yours.

I was looking for an interesting project to do with mine, just dont have the $ or
the parts yet. I was looking at this, but the last one went for over 1,000$.

Not sure what the cause for its non working condition, but would be cool if it just required
some TLC and a new 808 :san:

^ That thing could turn out to be a steal....they admit it's beyond there level of expertise so they probably haven't even looked at it for more than a second. It could very well be something stupid like a mis-aligined crystal or a dead pump. Even if you can't fix it it still would have some very high end components in it for laser use.

While >3~6W of 532 would be an awesome project, $1k is a bit of
a gamble..

When a lower power 532 fails, there are minimal issues to mend and fix
but for something of that power I have no idea what could go wrong.
I'd love to take a stab at it, but just too rich for my blood :cryyy:
 
Of course we would love to offer this with a warranty as well as showing it up and running but this laser is out of our range of expertise and equipment needed to operate and test. Sadly, we are offering this for parts, repair or experimentation and start the bidding off at $1.00. Bid what you think it's worth, We are not here to rip anyone off.


Looking at the pictures the warranty seal wasn't broken and it was made in 2010. It has no visible signs of any wear from the pictures and the sticker is in perfect shape. My gut tells me this really might be a worthwhile gamble...espicailly if everyone thinks its just broken.

you can adjust the dial in steps to get the proper voltage from 1,volt to 14,Vdc
30/35 Amps :beer:

Yup, I'v been eyeing a variable PSU for a while, but the ones that will go up to 40-60A get a bit expensive. Cheapest i'v found was a 15V 50A for around $300. The little ones i'm using is just because I didn't want to wait until I could afford a nicer PSU;) The one in your link is pretty fairly priced though...i'll put it in the maybe soon pile!
 
Thought I would share some photo's for those that are interested.

I decided to pop the top off the 'non-functioning' 12W diode that I have to take a look inside. Upon looking inside and taking photo's I think that it may be in working condition. I'm not sure, but the internals look to be intact from what I can tell. I may re-attach the lid and try it again when I get another PSU.
