It's really up to you then...Airports can take basically whatever they want any time...If you keep the batteries in a different place, I would bet they wouldn't mess with it. If it is a super expensive laser tho, I wouldn't risk it haha
I came back from Hong Kong earlier this year & was stressin' out hard trying to figure out how get the lasers I bought back into the US without customs them taking them away.
I checked them into my luggage, basically dismantled the best I could & put random pieces in different padded envelopes so it looked like a bunch of nonsense flashlight components & got through with no problems.
I however had a Laserglow Galileo 5mw pointer in my carry-on backpack that I had forgotten about until after I checked my bags. I realized it & immediately removed the battery in it. The TSA found it on the x-ray took it out & tried to turn it on, when it didn't work he put it back in my bag & sent me on my way!
