I had a 815 blow at 100ma tonight, and thought I would put up some Macros of the Diode.

Enjoy

You can see that the filament on the left side is off the post.

Actually, it's meant to be like that.

These diodes are case negative, meaning that the negative contact of the diode goes straight to the case of the diode.

Any damage would be to the die itself, and not visible without a microscope.

Maybe You guys just can't see it in the pictures, but the left Filament is NOT CONNECTED to anything. Since these diodes are not pumped with thousands of volts It won't magically jump the air gap. I can see in the pictures that it looks as if it's connected to the case, but it's not.

You probably only need the top photo. A front-view makes it easier to see the broken connection too. Here's a macro shot I took with a cheap webcam I got from DealExtreme which shows that kind of damage:

I used a Canon PowerShot SD630 in macro manual mode. It actually does a pretty good job once You get the correct F stop, exposure settings, and flash timing.

You mean 100mA AFTER about 700mA for two minutes? Lol

I don't know why a wire would break at only 100mA, but perhaps running it after COD made the diode extra hot, breaking the connection?

WTH COD? If You ever get a LOC up to 700ma please send Us a picture of the current reading! Murphy's Law applies to Diodes too Didn't You know that already?

Its been done before... but not for long!

Yeah, after a diode goes COD, it just sits there and heats up! Perhaps thats what broke the wire?
