Blew out Buck driver!

So I attempted my first laser build, a M140 diode with a buck driver and became frustrated with my mediocre soldering skills. So amidst the frustration I switched the pos and neg wires from the battery to the driver and burned it out immediately. Stupid mistake, I know. Should have been more careful.

My question is with the buck driver (1.8A X-drive) and the diode. Would the buck driver have saved the diode? or am I screwed on both ends here.

The X-drive if you reverse polarity will last a few seconds and burn out a chip on the driver without damaging the diode, but if it was on that way for a long time then I am not certain but probably your diode is ok.

Thanks for the reply Alan, yeah it was on for a split second, just on, burn, disconnected immediately.
Also, could this chip be replaced? Already purchased a new driver but if I could salvage this one that would be great!

Maybe, it should be that chip with 8 pins but I don't know what chip it is. When this happens there may be a burn spot on one corner of that chip.

The Buck Cnnvertor on the X-Drive, AFAIK, is a small ass chip, and iff you have "mediocre" soldering skills it is safe to say you will not be replacing it yourself. I would be cheaper to get a new one, or contact Lazerer to see if you can return the broken one and get the chip replaced.

Yea your diode should be just fine but you would need a new driver.:(
 
How much is that driver? Seems like too much trouble overy just buying a new one.
Very curious as to the logic behind repair vs replace on this one other than to try to see if you can do it. If I had the chip on me I would try but I wouldn't take it any further. Maybe you have access to parts though.

its $26 so it isnt that bad. and no i dont have access to the chip that blew out so I just ended up ordering a new one. Havnt had a chance to install it yet though.
