Bizarre 405 issue.

I was trying to sell or trade my waterproof 405 a while ago and had gotten an offer. So i sent it to bobhaha to LPM it and act as a middleman.

The laser turned up at his door DOA. I gave him the ok to open it up and assess what was wrong. After a month of PM's not getting through (from both ends) he shipped the laser back to me. It still didn't work when i received it back.

Today (3 Weeks after i receive the laser back (still dead)) i was moving some things around and rearranging my laser related items and dropped this one on the floor where it promptly turned itself on (i know i shouldn't store them with batteries in. Glad i did though) and started lasing again!

It now works perfectly again. has anyone else had this happen before? I've PM'd bobhaha and he is as confused as me.

wow lucky man, id say something went temporary open circuit and the shock from dropping it has complete the circuit again!

Cold (brittle) solder joint on the driver wiring, cold solder joint on the diode, or oxidization on the battery terminals or screw threading of the host. If the electro don't flow, you just ain't gonna go.

Probably pretty easily fixable. I'd reflow all solder joints, and hit the threads of the host and the back spring with some de-oxit. Try the easiest thing first, turning the endcap of the host while the laser is 'on' to see if it's intermittent. If it is, it's probably the threading. If you find shaking the whole deal turns it on and off, (don't do it) it's likely the driver wiring but I wouldn't recommend that, as it could be the driver->diode wiring, and in such a case an intermittent connection could charge the driver output cap and give the diode a "happy birthday surprise" on reconnect. (If it's a connection from the battery to the input, less of an issue.)

I've given myself a scare with some lasers I -really- didn't want to have die, with situations like this.

In situation like this I would dismantle the laser and check every part. The diode with the bench psu, driver with the testload and the battery with the multimeter. The fault will show up very quickly.

I'm don't remember exactly what bobhaha did when he dissected the laser, but I'm pretty sure he would have put it through some of these tests.

Either way as it stands it's working perfectly and I don't want to disassemble it again and break it. I'm happy to keep a miracle Jesus Laser

Once it stops working again I will be replacing the entire module with a 12x and boost/buck driver as suggested to me by bobhaha.

Lmao almost the same thing happened to me wit a 150mW green module. I had the module in a Jayrob Mini Mag Kit and i had taken it out in the snow over 2 years ago. I dropped the laser in the snow but it was still working fine. Later that day i tried turning the laser on but it wouldnt lase. I figured the snow had melted and shorted the module. 2 years later i still had the laser stored in a box and I wanted to sell the Mini Mag Kit so I took it out. I put a battery in just to see if the laser would work but it didnt. Then i dropped the laser and it started working again! I figured out that the tailswitch spring was sort of loose, which is a common problem with the tailcap. So theres my story lmao I have my awesome 150mW o-like module again!
