ok so after the first 2 successful builds i already made one 650nm and one 445 i want to built a 405nm so i made a mistake to buy 1st and read after :s(thats not even my type i still think how reckless i was)i already have ordered the BDR-209DBK diode, housing, lense and the problem comes to the driver, the driver is this one 1pc 5 5V 0 5 1 5A Power Drivers for 500mW 800mW 1W 405nm 450nm Blue Laser Diode | eBay that claims 405-450nm and starts from 500ma so it should be ok(i had hard time to find a 405nm driver that can do more that 400ma on ebay so ended with this choice :S also saw later those good drivers that DTR selling but already late) but after some hard reading on the forum everyone suggesting those soft start drivers etc and lot of those diodes fried on the 1st minutes of use and im afraid for the durability of this project:mad: i guess ill set the driver to 500ma(the minimum) but will this driver be bad for the diode?the items have some days and are already shipped so i cant do much about it.

ASK DTR

DTR has worked this out and I simply bought my BDR-209 with driver installed and set.

I would rather have 800mw that works for a long time than 950mw that dies once a week.

I have no problem pressing in my own diodes and soldering the smallest things, but the 405 diodes are very static sensitive, and as for ramp up and a safe operating current I suggest just buying the module from DTR, mine has been great.

These are the best drivers I've seen for this diode. They are boost drivers and are built by lazeerer. You could also get by with a continuous ground adjustable X-Drive if you want to use two Li-ion batteries. A cheap driver isn't worth destroying your diode for the sake of saving a little money. I would look into it, but that's just me. I have a lot of drivers in my stock that were ordered for a diode and then didn't use it because I found something better.

You are better off running that diode at about the 800mW mark than pushing them. I've built a lot of these and can always get them to laze over 1W on a variable DC power supply but they don't appreciate being spiked with the current needing to run that high all at once. Blowing these diodes starts to get old after a few;)

hi,
Yes the x boost that DTR sells are made by lazeerer and are the only drivers i use . The Nano Vs is about the best for these 405nm diodes i set mine to 600 or 650 mA's tops like everyone else has stated these 3.8mm diodes are fussy and get pissed at the blind of an eye. So do not go for the 1W holy grail route it will kill the diode eventually and short life.As for the drivers you bought , i would put them aside and get the Nano Vs X Boost set by Jordan of DTR. You'll thank yourself int the long run. Basically folks here will tell you the same .. Just don't get that diode angry be good to it and it will last..

Rich:)

thanks for the replyies guys,im dont want to push the diode i dont even have a problem to underdrive it like 500ma,on this current it still needs a soft start?if yes ill keep this driver for a 445 build and buy a new one

Hi DS,
Smart choice pal 405's are touchy diodes, some will take a 700mA current if your lucky to get a binned diode. But the higher percentage of them will not i set mine at 600 to 650mA's . First thing i do with all my diodes before i use them in a bid is to press them in a CU module then onto a Labby Heat sink fan cooled . I have 3 405 sleds to harvest a diode from well thats another story. Here's some pics of a cooled labby it's powered from a PSU.. Rich:)

i have also bought a psu 30v 5A but i still not have it and this thing is also not a soft start power to the diodes right?after some thoughts today i decided to try the diode with this driver just for the info and curiosity.ill take all the precautions for the diode and ill ran it without a soft start at 500ma.this will give some data on how this small diodes works with lower currents and harder starts, ill post info guys when ill start to building it.i think this experiment will give some good info on those 405nm diodes at least to a noob like me :D if someone has some other advice im here to hear it :)

Hi DS,
Ok when you first start to test Module pressed in diode, then into the Labby sink. Make sure you have a fan cooling the labby like in the pic.Turn on the PSU turn the voltage up a little bit. Then hook up your +Positive Wire and then the -Negative wire in that order. now start turning up the current slowly, the diode will respond when it stops climbing turn the voltage ups little more and it will resume lazing with the current knob until you reach the data maximum. keep your eye on the LPM while doing this cause by this you can see how efficient the diode is before roll back.
When you done testing lower the Voltage to zero and then the current to zero and disconnect the Neg wire first then the Pos last.

i dont have a lpm :cryyy: thats why i want to underpower alittle the diode to not risk it die from overcurrent in case that it is not an efficient one

Hi DS,
A PSU are not a lot of cash a good one you can get for about 65.00. And in this hobby they come in handy to see hoe well a diode can respond to a particular current. this way you can select the right set driver, without worry loosing the diode . That matched with an LPM is priceless and peace of mind knowing the out come of a build..

Rich:)

thanks for the advices,i already have ordered a psu 30v 5A but im still new here and i have to save up for an lpm and i guess if i want it quick i can not build any laser for half a year or so and that is sad:( but either way ill be focused on small builds for now like this 405 project i also have in mind to build a 9mm 445 the 7875model and one with the 500mw 632nm mitsubishi.still have long road for all those and the labby psu will help me alot for now :) ill post here again the results of this build for sure

edit:how much would i have to spent for an lpm?i just know that are expensive but i dont know know exaclty how much

HI DS,
Hey the PSU is fine for now ar least you can check the out put at that current on DTS website for that diode

Hi DS,
I also ordered a psu recentally but searched until I found a us seller, spent $55 and recieved it in 3 days.
Thanks for posting this thread cause I have ordered a couple ea. so6j 700mw and woo 900 mw diodes and am hungry for info on em. I too am in need of an lpm, I need 10w+ and am having trouble finding one I'm comfortable ordering so far, just not much out there.
Thanks again for posting....+rep

wow you have some powerfull 445 builds.thanks for your message ill sure let you know the results of the diode also if you find or you have found already any interesting lpm(i guess im looking something less impressive and more cost friendly) let me know,i dont need something that powerful to read 10w or i dont know XD,one day ill build this nubm44 diode for sure :lasergun:

Hi DS, the lower wattage lpm's are cheaper (100-150$) and easier to find.
As for the nubm44, it's impressive but the divergence sucks. I use a three element lens cause the beam is crap w/a g2. That means 30% less power (2 1/2 watts+/- meaning im getting 4-5 watts) I'll be honest with you, I like my lower (1-3) wattage units better. They're great burners with better beams and a hell of lot cheaper. My favorite laser is 3w 445. If you are intrested in optics and taming the 44's beam, get one.

(I should be getting some g7 lenses i ordered from Podo soon, hoping for a happy medium g2/3ele)
