Aurora Borealis Time Lapse

Its my first try with Aurora, so I was still struggling with seconds. I guess you actually need a 5 sec F2.8 exposure at ISO 6400 or something for time lapse, but I was doing 13-14 seconds.
With the in built intervalometer it was a 13 second shot with 14 second intervals, so 1 second gap between clips.

For stitching the videos I used avisynth with virtualdub. I must say, this is my first experience with non linear video editing, and I am liking it.

Anyways, do comment with your feedback. Watch in full HD for best effect.

Location is North norway(Troms) and Kilpisjarvi(Finland)

I am currently ramping up on my "avisynth skills".
I have two more sequences, one of stars and one of clouds.
I will stitch everything together to create my Norway Time Laspse.

I was always interested in photography, and with the D7000, I decided to get into time lapses as well.

That said, I made a few mistakes
1. Use a 13-14 second exposure time. This meant every frame was 14 seconds apart which means the Aurora appears very fast moving. Need to crank up ISO and use 5 seconds or so exposure time
2. 200 frames/per sequence is too short. I need something like 500 frames or so minimum
3. Few frames have flashes due to cars passing by the road side. Need to remove those frames.


Speaking about the Aurora, its truly an amazing thing. You have to have Aurora on your bucket list. People in EU or USA are so lucky. Without Visa etc., you can fly cheaply to a place which affords amazing Auroral views!
For us in India or near to equator, its a long flight to a far off place in a weather we are not really used to!

I have never seen the polar light in person. Thanks for sharing it us. I like it very much !

Photography is my hobby, so whenever me and my wife go on a trip, the camera goes. This was an Aurora trip to norway. So when you are outside staring at the skies all night long, might as well create a time Lapse :D
So to answer your question, its a hobby yes, and I get time for it only on vacation.
