The long wait is over, I am now the proud owner of an argon ion laser!!! It arrived yesterday, well packed and fully functional. The laser appears to be a BLUE multi-line laser, outputting six of the eight common visible argon wavelengths. Using a CD as a crude diffraction grating, they were matched to be the 465.8, 472.7, 476.5, 488.0, 496.5, 501.7nm lines, meaning the internal optics are filtering out the purple 457.9nm and the green 514.5nm. The hour meter of this laser has 477.6 hours logged, so it's practically brand new. Using the power and current meter built into the power supply, the maximum output was measured to be around 52mw at 8.2A of tube current.
I will be following up with a new thread that will include a much more detailed write-up, but that might be in a few days since this is my first time using a DSLR camera and I want to include some really nice beam shots. For now, here are the best quality photos I have been able to get:
