yeah - I know-- but all my stickies were requested by others-- I feel wierd doing that-- no matter how important-- I was hoping all newcomers (many per day) wouild read and post in it- which keeps any good thread near the top--

4/24 update- got reply from admin-

and I *think *due to nature of those arrested but innocent until proven etc etc- I guess anyway - its just not good for the forum to endorse this thread- & I can understand that- if we keep posting it wont need a sticky anyhoo
so please do not request a sticky for this thread--we dont have to change anything-hak

USA Pilots report an average of 10 'incidents' per day-- not sure, but I think those are the ones where the pilot saw the laser being aimed at him and NOT the reports where a pilot saw a laser beam that was NOT aimed at the aircraft-- AFAIK most of those incidents are also required by FAA to be reported- but of course they do nothing about those reports aside from keeping count--- This may be news to very many here--like-- giving crap advice about lasers are fine and dandy at night as long as you dont lase aircraft-- how do they know that??
is it worth risking?? Any member reading what they consider to be even slightly poor advice needs to click the '!' to the right of the rep button and allow a Mod to make that call- too many here are fast to red rep-

IMHO That is not fair, as you are assuming the poster KNEW his advice was not valid- BUT after a chat with a mod and seeing thier post deleted I feel they will get the message- ADVICE about what is 'LEGAL' needs to come ONLY from those who know--

Actually, I just recently read the definition of a laser incident at laserpointersafety.com :)

One question I have is if "laser incident" is the same thing as "laser illumination" and if "laser illumination" means that the aircraft was targeted/hit or just that the pilot(s) saw a laser.?

From what I got in the paragraph you posted...
Every (cockpit) illumination is an incident, but not every incident results in a (cockpit) illumination. So it's Schrödinger's Laser Beam....incidents both are, and are not illuminations. ;P

all incidents are sightings but not all sightings are incidents-

so you can think of all sightings as not being all incidents or maybe the cat is dead.

afaik the FAA makes pilots report intentional lasing -as such- & ITS kept seperate from just seeing a laser in use on the ground-
for sure piolots ssee WAY more than 10 lasers per day


and would take such reports 100 times more serious if at landing or take-off or the pilot felt he was flash blinded to an extreme- degree or repeatedly-- they send in a heli and many times the idiots cannot resisit lasing them TOO

*IF* I understoop Greg at the class- at first the FAA wanted pilots to report all lasing incidents- but i think they means only when the laser hit the cockpit- and it was at least a felony then
NOPW IRC all pilots are required to report sighting any laser but those that are just 'seen' on the ground are not added to the total sightings which ATM I read are average of ten per day from USA- I doubt many pilots report the majority of those NOT aimed st them-

So at present intentional lasing of aircraft is a Federal Offence at the descretion of the Feds- seems so far they have just let local/state court systems handle them.

If convicted in federal court IIRC there is no time off- or early release-

check out this thread-- but the OP was wanting to be closed so just a FYI from him- so lets move that into this thread-- its all relative to the big picture--

BUt i DO know this:: we(LPF) now have a high % of white males teens or 20s as members here ( & I feel that is more true with recent newcomers) and those are also the typical profile of those caught intentionally lasing aircaft--( cockpit illumination)

If the first timers will not read- or go look at links we offer then we need to work on that ourselves--


how about a pop quiz?- no fair looking up the answers--

1 T or F -- you can see in the sky were the beam ends- so aircraft many miles high cannot see a laser aimed at them.

2 T or F -- you cannot be arrested while using a 5 mW or less pointer in most cases.

3 T or F as long as you keep your laser beam below waist level or lower you wont get arrested.

4 T or F as long as the beam keeps moving there is not enough laser power to harm anyone and not illegal.

5 T or F not knowing what was illegal should be considered when you go to court.

Interesting concept, hak. I believe you are correct when you point out that there are more people coming into the forum who are in the age limits where most of these infractions occur. I also believe in your cause of being proactive about getting the information out to members as early as possible. You certainly have my support and if there is anything you can think of past what you have already suggested that I can do to help, let me know.

ez to copy and print--It can appear to be somewhat funny but we all know how serious this is-- also the "Dumb Ways To Die'" went virial- and did make a difference in accidents and deaths related to the Metro--check it out-& >84 million views!!!


While uber low tech-- the old reliable Bumper Sticker still gets seen a lot- there are some out there already and i bet we have the talent here to come up with many more-we can send out a file for each so many can print at home-or find a place that will print them on proper stock-

also even homemade PSAs can be seen on TV.

there are Fed. grants for such projects too.. free money for a good cause..

I guess I misunderstood the second question. If you were to shine a 5mW laser at a persons eye, it could blind or damage their vision, and that seems to be something one could be arrested for.

Agreed. Shining ANY laser power can be considered harassment.
 
According to the links provided by Mattronium, in many jurisdictions it is illegal to use a pointer of any power to be aimed at an aircraft, peace officer, or ground vehicle and carries punishments varying from misdemeanor up to felony status. So, the answers to all five questions would have to be false.

The power of the laser is kind of like the difference between aiming a BB-gun at an officer and a real gun. Both are the same kind of stupid act, and both are going to get you taken down.

Nobody should be zapping peoples' eyes, aiming at planes, or any of this stuff with lasers of any power beyond class 1. That said, it is the intent that matters too. We shouldn't be banning higher powered lasers just because some idiots can't control themselves. They're the ones that need to be served up as examples for others to see when they act like idiots.
