I like to read, hunt, fish, military weapon history, Midevil weaponry, smithing, lasers, technology, spending time with my kids, those are my hobby's what length is that Katana and were did you get it? Its clear that you have the training to wield it correctly

I apologize for being off topic, but who does you sharpening? I also have a blade fetish, however, mine primarily consists of vintage and classic pocket knives. I also collect various firearms and excel in marksmanship. I smile at the thought that I no longer feel alone having multiple widely varying hobbies! Looking at the edge retention, and I may be going out on a limb here, Is that katana Damascus?

I build airguns, fly rc planes with cameras, play with lasers, do bike riding, and mess with school wifi networks in my spare time.

I train several times a week in Toyama Ryu Battodo (strictly swordmanship). However, I don't get out to much lately to do any cutting due to being in the middle of the school year.
No it is not damascus.
This sword is just a low range competition cutter from Hanwei. They cost around $200 believe it or not. My practice sword cost more lol.
The total length of the sword is 40".
It is shaving sharp as you can see.
I haven't had it sharpened yet Nute.

My hobbies are mostly high voltage and electronics , but I do like reading fiction stories and listening to music all the time and drawing .

My quest will lead me to owning a shinshinto sword or Gendaito. I have been fascinated with swords since i was a young lad and if my body gets better and I am able to smith I plan to go to japan if it is possible with my family go learn smithing from a master in japan. I only know of a few westerners that have been taken on as apprentices by the few remaining masters in Japan. To study with one of the few masters in Japan is on my bucket list. I have made some crude roman short swords that did not hold up because of the smithing was wrong. Wrong type of steel. you need high carbon steel to make good swords. My other favorite thing to do is make wooden katana's for my grand kids. I have one I been working on a while once finished I will take some pictures and post them

I first bought a sword a few years ago because I was always fascinated with them as well. After receiving it I inquired about whether there was a place locally that I could train in its use. To my suprise I found a gentleman who is a sixth degree swordmaster who trained for years under a 9th degree master in Japan. He got permission from Japan to take the art to the United States. He recently stepped down as President of the US Toyama Ryu Battodo Federation. He is currently located in Orlando (Just my luck 30 min drive from my house).
Toyama Ryu was developed in the late 1800's as a mix of the old sword arts and taught to the soldiers of the Japanese army. The style is geared toward the kill and not really meant to look pretty, such as in Iaido.
One thing that sets Toyama Ryu apart from the other sword arts is that we train in actual cutting. (traditionally tameshigiri which is rolled up and soaked rice mats that are stuck onto a pike) I use bottles at home because they are cheap
We have people of all ages (except under 18), and health conditions that train with us. Most of them are between the ages of 30 - 60 years.

I also belong to a group called United Backyard Cutters which is a mix of people who enjoy swords and practical cutting. Just like this forum, there are people with years of experience there who will help new comers to the hobby, especially with safety. They generally don't recommend newcomers to grab a sword and start chopping. Everybody starts with a wooden bokken, and even the advanced people continue the use the bokken for practice along with an unsharpened katana.
