I recently purchased a 100mW 532nm pointer from AliExpress (seller Luck Shop).

free shipping lowest price high quality 5000mw Handheld Adjust Focus green / red Laser Pointer SDLaser 302-in Laser Pointers from Office & School Supplies on Aliexpress.com

It arrived the day after Christmas.

My surprise is that when I used it to test my newly constructed LPM:

it measured 98.8mW. Pretty close to spec. I was expecting one with about half of the advertised output.

:D

Here's the thread on the meter:

I'm sure a big portion of that output is IR unless it has a ir filter which I doubt it does especially since it's coming from aliexpress.

Who cares about ir!! Good deal. Ir or not. I don't know about you gs but having ir or nt doesn't effect how careful I am.

Uh you do realize IR is bad for eyes? since you cant see it you cant react or anything, even your 532nm goggles are useless filter it out...

Since you can't see it how can it hurt you ?!? If you can't see it, there's like, no way it could hurt you and I know that for a fact!!!
;)

Lol yeah, I'm fully aware of the dangers of ir. I'm just making a point that even if it does have ir, we don't go staring into our lasers anyway. So all the " omg it doesn't have a filter" really doesn't need to be stated, because we all know cheap Chinese lasers don't have ir filters. And we also know to be carful with any laser ir or not.

So .....UH.... YEAH I realize ir is bad for your eyes ..

Good so dont make urself funny about it.. once damage to your eyes it can be permanent please take it more seriously then. People tend to get excited for cheap lasers that are super powerful but forget how much harm they can cause since you cant see the IR light, that to me is a big deal.Just the fact that its leaking and some can have huge amounts is not what u want in your eyes.

I'm aware of the IR leakage from cheap pens/lasers. A cheap ebay pen I have that metered 40mW has 35mW of IR.

This one from ALiExpress has about 20mW of IR. It meters around 98mW to 102mW without an IR filter. Put a filter in front of it and the power drops to 80mW to 82mW.

Unlike the cheap ebay pens, this one has a nice flat surface on the front. I will probably epoxy an IR filter on the front of it. I could disassemble it but it will be easier to just epoxy a filter on the front of focusing ring.

That will make it an 80mW 532nm laser instead of a 100mW 532nm one. But, I will probably pay more for the filter than I did for the laser.

I would just leave the laser as is:) especially since it has a nice flat front surface and the IR output isn't that major.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as long as the beam doesn't hit your eyes (which it shouldn't be anyway's ) the IR can't do any damage:huh:

That's what I was saying. People get all preachy with ir. omg it's sooooo bad!!!!!!! So does that mean the rest of your lasers your less careful with? People just want something to rant about. I agree it's dangerous, but so is a 1w plus 445, but these ir nazis aren't all over the 445 build threads saying " omg sooo dangerous" .. At least not like they do with cheap little 532 putting out less than 100mw total.

I can't see the deadly carbon monoxide coming out of my car. That doesn't mean I need to throw the car away and get an electric one. Take some basic safety precautions and there's nothing to worry about.

I just bought one from the link u gave.. Hopefully mine as good as urs too..hehe

Do you have a LPM? Would be cool to see if they are consistently on spec. If you do have a meter and some safety goggles, then you can test how much IR there really is (put your goggles between the laser and meter)

I don't have lpm..can't measure it up..hopefully it doesn't go way to under spec ..haha..bought one previously 100mw from china website it's way under spec cheappo laser
