Acer 1810TZ 3G Edition - a Traveller Review

Hi2all,

some of you may know me here thx to my DIY Laser reviews, but like many of you, lasers are just one my hobbies and PCs (and computing in general) is another of my passions!

I recently decided to get myself a "Netbook" (seeing as my 2.0Kg Notebook was feeling a bit too big, rofl). So after quite a bit of online research, I found and bought a really nice and [relatively] powerful Netbook, the Acer 1810TZ! I managed to do a short review on it and I thought it might interest some of you here at LPF too :beer:

Have you ever tried the ASUS EEE 1000HE?

I configured one for my uncle, it's pretty good for what it is... though the price on it is kinda steep

Niko I'll be getting the Asus EEE 1005HA-P for Xmas this year. I've played with them before and they're sweet little things. Found a good deal on Amazon for it too.

The 1000HE is better than the 1005HA, it's a bit faster and it offers more battery duration, you should look into it Also, don't forget to upgrade it to 2GB of RAM.

With the right codecs and config I was able to watch 720p blurips comfortably.

I was under the impression that the 1000 was the prior model?

I think I have plenty of battery of life on my model, it's rated at 10.5 hours. LOL. Oh and I'll be upgrading to 2gb of ram as soon as I get it.

What processor does the HE, run? I'm guessing the Z520 or Z530 since you mentioned HD playback. The 1005 has a N280 clocked at 1.66Ghz which slightly outperforms the the Z series Atom processor in benchmark tests. Only trade-off though is that the N series doesn't play HD videos back as well as the Z series does.

Officialy, Acer sells it as a Notebook and indeed, it's a few mm larger than ASUS' offerings (eg. Eee 1101), but compard to my XPS M1330, it might as well be a Netbook

Niko, I agree with Rob - at least in our Hemisphere, the 1000H(E)s have long since left the market and was replaced with the 1005HA (-H & -M)& 1008HA (the lightest but has a non-removable, built-in battery). Those use the "old" 270/N280 Atoms.

The 1101HA is of the new Atom breed (Z520) and has a higher-res, 11.6" screen (same AU Optronics panel as found on my Acer).

Problem is, the Z520 is actually weaker than the 270/280 processors and the 1101 has to "power" more pixels... bad, bad move!

Actually, Rob has chosen the best of the current Asus Atoms, the 1105HA. Just be careful - one version comes with BT & the slightly more powerful 280 and the other version comes without BT and a N270. The latter sells for €300 in EU which is a killer price, but you "only" get what you pay for. In EU you should expect to shell out €400 for a decent Netbook, imho...



EDIT: I stand corrected. sort of. I was surprised to find one vendor still selling a 1000HE (Amazon...) :-/
